Tompkins Square Park lights covered

The lights in TSP usually look like...



And now, some of them are covered...for unknown reasons...? (Oh, right — as a reader points out, for the movies. Like tonight's showing of "Claire's Knee." For some reason, I hadn't noticed this before...Is it a good idea to leave the lights covered on nights that movies aren't playing?)

i'd guess movies in the park has something to do with it. that or christo is in town.

Right, anon. I forgot about the movies. The French films that have played Friday evenings. (Tonight: "Claire's Knee.")

I noticed that the other night. I figured it was for the movies, but there was no movie that night; seems they should unwrap the lights -- especially considering the reports of worse-than-normal fights in the park earlier this summer.
