What's going on....?

We're getting several reports that police helicopters are circling Tompkins Square Park and vicinity. Wrote one reader: "It's crazy. They're obviously looking for someone."

Lux Living just checked in:

"ok...WHAT is up with that f'n helicopter?!?!"

He reports that the helicopter has been hovering for nearly 30 minutes....

UPDATE:

Probably not related at all....However, Gawker is reporting via a tipster that someone jumped in from of the L train at First Avenue...and the L is shut from Eighth Avenue to Bedford.

UPDATE (1:11):

1010 WINS reports:

Police say they were called to the L subway station at 14th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan on Wednesday.

Officers found an unconscious 49-year-old man on the tracks. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has not been identified.

The medical examiner's office will determine how he died.

Train service on the line, which was suspended for nearly 1 1/2 hours in both directions, has resumed.

Quiet--finally--all of a sudden. Either they found what they were looking for or gave up. Or maybe just widened their search over some other part of the neighborhood.

It felt like the days when the city was evicting squatters, with the incessant helicopter buzzing.

Thanks, John. I was surprised how many people said something...made it seem as if this was really something out of the ordinary.

It went on for a while and it was flying really low. It flew off for about 20 minutes then was back for a little while.

And in such wind....

Drove me crazy this morning - kept hovering right over my building beginning around 8am and was still going on at 9am. Couldn't hear the weather report over all the noise. Walked past the precinct on 5th St, but nothing out of the ordinary...

Back and forth with the helicopter! All morning! I presume it was another police search and wonder if helicopters are in use as much in other neighborhoods.

Perhaps it was a photo shoot for new nypd whirlybirds?

Well, the police building on 8th and C hosts a fair number of training "events" etc. When the neighborhood fills up with trucks and SUVs with NRA stickers--though usually on weekends--you can count on some weirdness in the 'hood.

I don't know if it's related but I saw police stop a school bus this morning, that had everyone off of it, parked in the middle of the street. The heli did seem to be circling that general vicinity.

I just read that there will be helicopters hovering over Chelsea tomorrow for a film shoot, so maybe this was one, too?

I like the posting of the unconscious man on the tracks who is also dead.

I had some half-assed idea that the person the cops were looking for ran down into the L station and tried to make a getaway in the subway tunnel.
