BrickUnderground (via Gothamist) has the story on the noisiest neighborhoods in the city... based on 311 records for 2009 (sorted by Community Boards). And the
1) Washington Heights/Inwood -- where 6,439 such grievances were filed last year.
2) Harlem, with 4,152 complaints.
3) Community Board 3, which includes the East Village, the Lower East Side and Chinatown, came in third with 3,637 complaints in 2009.
One EV resident told BrickUnderground that bars are to blame.
"It's not loud because of the residents but because of the bar crowd," she says. "The summertime is especially bad if you have to keep the windows open. It seems like an ongoing party in the streets."

I really hate the Back-up BEEP.
You know, big trucks and a lot of other vehicles that BEEP really loudly when they are backing up.
Every night, in the middle of the night. I wake up hearing this BEEPing. and I'm on the 5th Floor with my windows closed tight and earplugs in my ears.
So why does the BEEPING have to be so damn loud? I'm nowhere near the vehicle in question. I don't need this warning. Can't it be more directional directly behind rather than broadcast for blocks?
I'm I the only one who is bothered by this?

I suggest the vehicles be retrofitted to just shoot out blasts of hot air from their rear bumper when they go into reverse. Then even the deaf will know to get out of the way and let the rest of us sleep in peace.

Yeah. There is the general suckness of backup beeps generally, But I wish to god i could understand why those things are so loud(?)
I mean; if the idea is to warn some unaware person standing behind a vehicle, why the ridiculous volume level?
