An East Second Street now and then

Earlier today, I posted several photos from Brian Rose's new book on the Lower East Side from 1980 and today...

Thanks to EV Grieve reader AdamA for pointing out a pretty good Google Street View approximation of one of the photos...

East Second Street where it merges with Houston between Avenue C and Avenue D

And via Google... a Street View that is at least two years old... the corner of Houston and Avenue D has been razed. Still.

Seriously love these before-after photos!

I actually used Street View when putting together the book to help identify locations. Sometimes the scene was surprisingly unchanged, other times, completely transformed. In the end, I was able to ID all the locations from 1980.

Any pictures of Clinton Street? I just moved into 20 Clinton (Houston/Stanton) and have only found one archival photo, from about 1940.

I just remember the danger and the poverty. Why are we glorifying this?

check out the library's digital archives: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/index.cfm

they have a ton of old (like 1800s-1930s) photos of the city, and if you search for your street you can often find stuff

Baha, you remember that dreamland because you didnt grow up being the only white person on Avenue D. Then you would remember the fear and the danger and the knives being pulled and the gunshots and tghe rioting. So my dear, you remember some idyllic world that existed (maybe) from Avenue A going west. That's not the EV that I remember with very little fondness.

Adam A -- Thanks for the tip on the library. I dig through the digital collection there sometimes, but haven't found anything with 20 Clinton. Is it worth making a trip to the library in person instead of online?
