Help the East Side Community School win $500,000

Over on 12th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue, students and teachers are outside with computers to get people to vote online so that the school can win $500,000 in the Kohl's Cares for Kids contest. Per the reader who sent me the photos and tip: "It's pretty cool to see them all out there doing this." The students and teachers will be out until later this evening. (Hoping they get in before the zombies arrive!) You can also vote from home. If you go to www.eschs.org, then you'll find more details.

Eastside is next door to me, love the kids and staff.

I voted, then promptly removed all evidence of Kohls from my activity on Facebook.

Go Eastside!

well said Larry and never thought of it so clearly - though I hate these contests that pit people against one another in general - it's humiliating in some way. but the fact that the company gets all the pr for "free" is really gross.
anyway - glad you can control of of it on FB.
I heard story on NY1 and heard no mention of Kohl's - so mabe that's good.

Hi I know East Side personally and I do agree with you both. Why not just come to the schools and donate the money?? But alas that's the reality that we face and with so many budget cuts taking place, we do need the money; so we are just trying to get the public to help us. So like Shawn did, plz vote and then remove them from your page if you wish.
THanks for your support.

This is for Larry and the other Anonymous comments. I graduated from East Side about 3-4 years ago. Back then, the school was just starting to get up from their feet by purchasing new equipment for student use. Now I'm a Senior in college and looking at the school now, there has been a MAJOR CHANGE for the better. This competition is not about the money or feeling embarrassed for doing it to not get anything at all. This is about the kids future. East Side wants to provide their students with the necessary tools in order to succeed in their high school and college careers. So whether or not we win, as long as we made the effort in trying to win the $500,000 instead of being a couch potato is all that counts. I know Mark is going to do his thing and better the school regardless of the money situation. To me, he already has and I'm proud of the fact that I graduated from East Side Community High School.

Larry is such a downer. Help out the school so these kids have a better future. And not every company is evil. Good for Kohl's for sponsoring this promotion and good luck to the neighborhood kids. Keep up the positivity!

People act as if some corporate sponsorshp is evil or new. When I was in grammer school oh so many decades ago we collected Campbell soup labels to qualify for some free school supplies, and cereal tops -- I think it was Post -- for gym equipment.
