Looking for volunteer opportunities during the holidays

A reader, fairly new to the neighborhood, is looking to volunteer somewhere in the East Village during the holidays... "Do you know which churches/shelters in the area accept volunteers?" Thought I'd open it up for suggestions... perhaps come up with some ideas a little off the radar ... and maybe inspire someone else to volunteer...

I'm ashamed to say I don't know the name, but I'd try the Catholic soup kitchen on 1st Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue (north side of street, near the gas station).

The Fathers' Heart Church on 11th st. between Avenue A and B. Every Saturday morning except the first Saturday of the month, serves breakfast and pantry to hundreds of hungry East Villagers. They are also in need of donations ( money that is) for the food program and to save their very old roof.
