Heathers lives

Last month, the CB3/SLA committee voted not to renew the East 13th Street bar's liquor license. So it was left up to the State Liquor Authority to have the final say. According to the Heathers Facebook page:

HEATHERS LIVES!
License is renewed, and in hand!!!

According to the SLA, the license now expires Oct. 31, 2013.

This is the second time in recents months in which the CB3/SLA committee voted not to renew a bar's license "with complaint history." ... only to have the State Liquor Authority give the OK for the renewal. (See TenEleven)

Whew. For a while there, I thought all those Williamsburg artistic types were not going to have any place to drink and carry on. I mean, God knows, there aren't any places in Williamsburg...oh, wait...

But I do sympathize greatly with Heather when she says the stupid smoking law causes a big chunk of the noise neighbors all over the EV complain about. When people could smoke inside the bars--and smoke haters could just leave for a different clime--it was a lot quieter around drinking establishments. But, Bloomberg, being the fussy old woman that he is, couldn't let that one alone.

@John M - It's an absolute fact that the noise from smokers is the cause for a lot of the noise outside of bars. It's inevitable that an inebriated person who comes outside from a loud bar is going to talk in a VERY loud voice. But to lay the blame at Bloomberg's feet is ridiculous. There are smoking bans in over 100 countries. It's the way of the future nearly everywhere.

Well there is something about this generation of kids that everything they do is in a loud voice. I really shouldn't hear the neighbors in the yard 3 doors down with my windows closed but I do. I think investing in hearing loss related industries is a major growth option with these kids, they're blowing their ears out with their ithings.

Great news - great bar!

Happy hour is good and you can escape the typical weekend crowd here. As bars go - Heathers is the least of the EVs problem. I also love the smoke free atmosphere in bars - as a non smoker.

"What's your damage Heather?"

I apologize for that, I just couldn't resist.

This is great news - Heathers is a great local bar!

It stands tall on it's own, but compared to many of the new EV bars, Heathers is outstanding!

OCCUPY STATE LIQUOR AUTHORITY!

Good to see that NY State cares more about fees for these licenses and taxes from these businesses than they do about those of us who live here. So now that Heather is back in business will she be more responsive to the concerns of her neighbors or just contimue to ignore them for two more years. The bar and lounge owners know that the SLA doesn't care about noise or crowds and only cares about violence and underage so they have no incentive to be good neighbors. Finally those of us who live on Avenue A and there are alot of us, want to thank Heather for sending her patrons to smoke and shout into their cell phones underneath our apartments and in our doorways!

I'm sure bar owners would much rather have their patrons INSIDE DRINKING that standing outside and NOT! Well, to all those folks who thought as non-smokers and/or non-bar patrons that the smoking ban wouldn't affect you. Please enjoy!

Yeah, and what Anonymous said yesterday.

As for not laying the blame for the smoking ban on Bloomberg, that's absurd. New York City is not the rest of the world, that's why I'm here...obviously some people are here because they want it to be more like everywhere else. Like, say, our mayor. (If you do some looking into the primary research on second-hand smoke, you also might discover that scientifically, those concerns are doubtful at best.)

As Mom and Dad used to say, just because everyone else ran naked and jumped off a bridge, would you? ha ha ha ha
