John's of 12th Street has a new awning

John's Italian restaurant on East 12th Street is certainly a neighborhood treasure... Jeremiah pointed out at the beginning of the year that the 100-plus year-old restaurant is now offering vegetarian fare...

All fine... Anyway, EV Grieve reader James C. Taylor noted that they've made this part of their awning now too...

Before!

Now!

Not sure exactly when it went up... noting it nonetheless...

Via Twitter, they told us "Just trying to mix in some 'new school' with the 'old school.'"

it's funny and sad at the same time.

I noticed this the other day, and my friend theorized that they're probably hoping to lure the overflow from Angelika's Kitchen next door by promoting themselves as vegan. I agree with the previous poster's sentiments regarding the new sign.

As a pretty-much-vegan (my boots are leather and occasionally I eat Greek yogurt) I think this is sweet. I mean yeah, the sign is now a little odd and anachronistic. But like most classic Italian restaurants, John's probably always offered vegetarian fare yet just didn't label it that way. I'd much rather eat at John's than Angelika anyway.
