Why did the NYPD pepper spray and tackle these people on Avenue A and Sixth Street Friday night?

You may have seen this earlier today... I spotted it at Gothamist... Someone uploaded a video to MyBlockNYC from Friday night on Avenue A at Sixth Street that shows a cop pepper-spraying some revelers... and then, a tackle...

The NYPD didn't arrest or charge anyone after all that.

You that doesnt look like brutality, that looks like the cops told you to leave and you didnt. What good do people think is gonna happen when you dont leave when the cops tell you? I know for a fact, the cops say leave, you LEAVE. Aint nothin good gonna be happening. Stupid Ave A liberal yuppies.

Looks like the "revelers" were interfering with an arrest. From the audio its sounds like "it was Kevin" and "what's the charge?" Looks like they were blocking the car. The fact that these hipsters are not worried about getting in the cops face shows that police brutality is not as prevelant as these crybabies claim. Where is the brutality?, a little pepper spray? Annoying maybe, but not brutality. Had we done that in the 70's or 80's, the cops would have given us what they called a "Wood Shampoo", a night stick to the head.

Because they weren't drunk enough to rape.

I mean, the police did just spray into a crowd of people in a "willy-nilly" sort of way, which isn't how pepper spray is supposed to be used, but those people were crowding around a police car. Also, it seems the dude who was tackled had done something to inflame them, probably physically in the form of throwing something at them or something similar, as he is seen running away with a huge head start...
This is America, what do you expect to happen? We know this is a police state. They're lucky they weren't wrongly imprisoned, at least.

I can't even tell what's going on here. However, I do know that if you get pulled over for something it's probably not a good idea to run after you've been detained or for your drunk ass friends to bang on the squad car.

what can you say ? Sometimes you need to put the beat down on these idiots. What do you expect when you harass the cops & point your cameras in their face ? Idiots.

They already made their arrest before the hecklers intervened.

There was an arrest. I was there walking by and what happened was the cops arrested a young man and about 10-15 of his friends were unhappy with his arrest and surrounded the cop car and started hitting it and trying to open the police car doors. The cops got out because they couldn't safely drive away without running someone over. They told the people to move and they refused and thats when the cop maced the crowd. Then one of the kids friends opened the car door so his friend (who was handcuffed) could escape. His friend ran down the block a little before getting caught and he was brought back into custody. It was not police brutality and the group was very rambunctious and aggressive.

Yes, that is exactly what happened. I heard the same story from someone on the scene.

lovely how every young, priveleged white kid calls everything the cops do "police brutality", even when they're arresting someone who has committed violent crimes. then they moan and bitch when they get their iphones stolen in the subway.
this makes me embarassed to be white and educated....

Pepper spray is no joke, and even the NYPD's own guidelines recognize this. In fact, according to the Patrol handbook, after anyone is sprayed, the officers are required to repor the use, and "Officers are required to request the response of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) once the situation is under control." That's right--police are required by their own policy to get EMS there to check on spray-ees.

Well, yeah, people die on a fairly regular basis after being pepper sprayed, particularly in combination with "hog-tie" type situations, usually because they go into acute asthma attacks and can't breathe. It's also EXCRUCIATINGLY painful. For a long time. I don't know what happened here or if the cops were out of control or not, but all the bravado about "Stop whining hipsters it's only a little stinging" is total bullshit. Pepper spray is serious stuff and used cavalierly, as cops often do use it, damn right, it's abuse.

The "Spray-ees",
"revelers",or "Hecklers" as they've been referred to, should have been arrested for any number of charges. I don't blame the cops for driving away(with an arrestee in the back seat). The crowd tried to open the car door and prevent them from driving away. This is same "I can do what ever I want", dis-respectful attitude we endure every weekend. I miss the old E.V. when these mid-west weekend invaders wouldn't dare venture east of 2nd Avenue.

Lord knows what PBR fueled asperger tantrum those two poor cops stumbled into. I'll chalk this up as NY: 1 NJ: 0
I hope they took their bedbugs back with them to the PATH station

Well as an advocate in the use of pepperspray for personal safety, the use of a pepperspray product in this situation was not brutality. The police officers personal safety could have been seen as in jeopardy. Crowd control needed to be obtained and maintained. I am sure we would not want to see another Kent State incident with the use of sticks and guns. However if the pepperspray is used by law enforcers the pepper sprayed person should be medically attended.
