What is wrong with people?! It's bread; you can freeze it and eat at another time. I will never understand people who waste food, especially with so much homelessness and poverty around us.
For some reason, homeless people don't like bread products. When I was still gainfully employed, I used to walk by Union Square East every single night/morning. The "Au Bon Pain" people always used to put their unsold products in impeccably clean, triple protected garbage bags. I never saw anyone availing him/herself of the goodies. The only reason I didn't grab stuff was because I felt guilty about taking food from a homeless person's mouth.
