This is what the corner of First Avenue and East Fifth Street looked like on Aug. 17, 2012

This year, we'll post photos like this of various buildings, streetscenes, etc., to capture them as they looked at this time and place... The photos may not be the most telling now, but they likely will be one day...

Beautifully captured ambiance. That's exactly the way it looked on my walk home from a few early cocktails.

I do not understand why 7-11 is the subject of so much scorn (actually I do), but Rite Aid, particularly this Rite Aid, seems to escape the same scrutiny.

NY, NY based Duane Reade is superior anyway.

Ugh! That Rite Aid is awful.

And I did this particular shot because of the plans for the new apartment building adjacent to the drug store...

I am this Rite Aid's only defender...mostly because I use it all the time and dread what could be there instead. It's the underdog of Rite Aids, so I feel sorry for it.

They are putting an apartment building in the little hole just south of Rite Aid? Wow.

@Googla

While I do despise the store, its goods and how ridiculously expensive many of their items are, the check-out ladies have really grown on me. Of course there are usually about 3 people working in the entire store at any one time, so I try to go in with a patient outlook.

OMG you can actually see the sky and get some sense of expAansiveness. That must immediately be eradicated by building a new, giant monstrosity on this corner, one which will block all air and light.

The building supposed to go up on that empty lot has remain unbuilt for about 5-6 years now so I would not exactly worry about it until you see actual girders going up.
