Have the obnoxiously too bright lights at St. Brigid's on Avenue B bothered anyone else?
Well, yes — one reader mentioned the "the ludicrously bright lights and ugly fixtures" in this post about the bells of St. Brigid's.
Anyway, the reader understands the deterrent from possible vandalism (and perhaps warding off anyone from sleeping on the front steps) that the lights provide.
"But they are so freaking bright! I wonder if the fact that they're bothering me is my anal-retentiveness coming out ... or I’m guessing I can’t be the only one."
Anyone else with a comment on the lights?

Yeah they look annoying...light movie lights... not sure if they're that bright or if it's the photo.

Actually, your photo pretty accurately conveys how bright they are. I was trying to determine whether the choice of lamp and fixture and the subsequent brightness was intentional or consequential. They are some sort of small metal halide lamp. There are three in each fixture. Those lamps pack a lot of punch. In addition, neither the lamps not the fixture have any diffusion and therefore are both hard and harsh.
Their brightness is certainly a deterrent to loitering, but, I suspect, there was no real thought put into the aesthetic of the actual light being emitted.
Light pollution.
7-11 is gonna have to step it up to compete!
Had ONE of these at peak of three story farmhouse......lit up an area 200x300 feet with no problem.
Here's what I know :
Expensive units to purchase and install.....need 220v service.
VERY expensive to replace....haloid filament was $20 when we had them.
SUPER VERY expensive to operate....sucks the juice like Bieber sucks at singing.....which is ALOT!
So, what, is St. Brigid's sittin' on a ton of cash? After all the money spent restoring, crappin' up the aesthetics makes NO sense!
This is a good thing. Anything to shine and put a spot on those wooooo-wooooers at night.
Definitely too bright.
I'm a lighting designer working and living just around the corner from the church. While passing it the other day the first thing I noticed as approaching the building was the excessively bright lights. Ugh.
