Another East Village record store closes

EVG reader Corina notes that Tropicalia in Furs, the speciality record store on East Fifth Street near Second Avenue, has closed... The storefront is now for rent. No food, per the sign.

Among other genres, the store carried rare records of Brazilian music from the 1960s and 1970s. This is the latest small-shop closure on this block... along with Gimme Gimme Records ... and Ballaro Bakery.

the problem isn't lack of record sales, the problem is unrestricted landlord greed. No one can afford a back stock or to be a sleepy asset in Landlordville.

Query to all commenters (and blogmeister EVG): What's left in the neighborhood that deals in used vinyl?

@ BabyDave...

Academy Records on East 12th Street... A-1 Records on East 6th... Good Records NYC on East Fifth Street .... and I *think* Kim's on First Avenue has some used vinyl...

Thank you, EVG.

Kim's has used vinyl, but it's pretty pricey. I'd stick with the other places you mentioned, Grieve.

Damn... I bought my copy of "Love You Live" there. Does the Abraco coffee place still spin Brazilian LPs? The owner there once told me that Caetano Veloso lives in the area... I always imagined him shopping at Tropicalia in Furs.

Academy is by far the neighborhood's best bet in terms of selection/price. Big City Records also had a good Brazilian/Latin section... but alas.

That sucks. East Village like all of NYC is now dead. Time to hit the road to sunny LA.

Damn. They were nice people. I didnt even notice.

Why so many East Village vinyl stores closing while vinyl sales are booming, and increasing year after year?

Maybe most of those sales are online. I'd much rather buy vinyl in person, especially used vinyl, so I can check its condition firsthand.

Let's not forget the vinyl guy who sets up on Astor Place! The man knows his vinyl.
