New-look Flea Market Cafe shows itself on Avenue A; reopens March 11

The Flea Market Cafe closed back in the fall for renovations... the paper is off the front windows now...

The folks at Ten Degrees around the corner on St. Mark's are now operating the restaurant. There's not much information on the Cafe's website, except for the opening date — March 11.

H/T to esquared™ who had the details last month in a comment.

Yuck! They ruined it!

Khakis in restaurant form. It's so bland compared to the old space with the mirrors and cool stuff on the walls. I used to eat there weekly. This hurts.

Totally ruined it. So depressed - Flea Market is gone.

Boo. Looks like a Pier 1 showroom.

At least all the dust is gone. That's all they had to do with the old space. DUST.

I hate when restaurants line tables next to each other so close like that. I know, it saves room and all. But it also means when someone is being seated, they have to move the table over and then back and there is zero room to keep your handbag with you, not to mention the fact that you are sitting on top of strangers who always are having the most annoyingly loud conversation ever. (I should just stay home always, right?)

Lol It does look like Pier 1!

Looks about as comfy and enticing as the interior of an iron maiden.

Wow- they just sucked all the character out. And they seem to have fewer tables? Too bad - this was a great spot for a nice meal for a reasonable price.

Definitely looks less interesting, I wonder why they sucked out SO much of the character. I understand cleaning it up a bit, though. I perssonally wouldn't want to eat at tables so close together.

Sums up and exemplifies what's going on in the EV and rest of NYC -- destroys the character and soul and replace it with something sterile.

Bless all of these comments.
These sentiments are why I read this blog.

My review from Yelp:

Just pretend its still closed!

They should be mandated to change the name so no one associates this Flea Market with what used to be one of the best and most reliable spots in the East Village, especially for brunch. The renovations are horrible. They turned a little piece of Paris into a generic sloppy diner/bistro. What used to be cozy is now cold. The decor is disgusting and they robbed us of the counter seats facing out of the windows onto the park. The staff, formerly consisting to of French ex pats and east village locals have been replaced with bridge an tunnelers and hipster wannabes. Don't have your brunch at the bar unless you want the bartender to forget to put in half your order. The waffles, which used to be the best in the east village and were authentically Belgian were cold and undercooked. I could actually taste the raw batter. And the banana was over ripe to boot. The coffee, which used to be strong and flavorful was like average deli coffee. I'd give it one more try for lunch or dinner but I'm sure I'd just be disappointed.

Please don't pay any attention to any yelp reviews of this place that were written before March 1. Those are reviews of a completely different restaurant. Yelp should delete any reviews posted before they reopened. I'd give it half a star if I could.

So sad to have lost one of my favorite spots in the hood.
