Chip! Chip! Hooray!

As you can see, a very large pile of wood chips arrived today in Tompkins Square Park. At least we think they are wood chips. Anyway, they are for the Park's new self-serve Meat Smoking Section flowerbeds and stuff.

Photo by Bobby Williams, who shouldn't be held responsible for that headline.

You know what's cool about those piles? Spontaneous combustion. Once they've been in place for a while, the heat inside them gets so high the wood starts smoking. Sometimes the fire department has to come.

Hmmmm......slowly-smouldering wood chips....

...smoked baby-back rat ribs....

.....with the right sauce, we're talkin' artis-anal.

That's organic pot...smoke a few pipe-fulls and you'll feel like it's 1968 all over again.

Since the Parks Department has decided to let Tompkins go without a gardener -- let's take bets on how long they sit there.

...what happened to TSP gardener this year, Anon 11:18? Do you know?

For rogue gardeners tempted to tote some of this stuff home, just remember: dogs piss on chip piles every time they walk by them. I've seen it done in TSP last year!

Reply to anon 8:09. Tompkins, gardener has been on extended sick leave since this winter and its unclear whether she will return. East River Park has also lost their gardener who moved to another district last year. The Parks Dept. has not replaced either or sent temporary support. Instead they have told Park staff to make do and find volunteers to do the work

Thanks 5.58 -- perhaps we could send a notice to the community gardens/groups. Could probably organize some work parties...
