Kamakura Coffee Shop has closed on East 5th Street

We were really sorry to see that the little coffee shop here just west of Avenue B closed last week. It was a nice, unpretentious spot with good coffee and (mostly) vegan baked goods.

The shop was named for Tom the owner's hometown in Japan. He opened up here last Sept. 30.

It actually closed more like three weeks ago.

Darn, I'd only just noticed this place a couple of weeks ago, and the vegan banana cake was excellent. It was in an out of the way location. Sorry to see it go.

He was open last weekend. I stopped by. Wish I had known he was closing soon.

Lots of times a new business fails not because of huge rent increases but lack of experience, bad location, lack of marketing, invisible storefront, or just too many similar options for customers. I always hate seeing a small biz shutter but sometime you must fail and learn from those mistake to make the next business a success.

I moved a block away from here a couple months ago. I tried going there for my morning coffee(8am) at least 4 times and they were not open once. No sign with hours, no hours on a website, no help from yelp… I assumed they've been closed a long time
That area really needs a good coffee spot.

I only went there once because he was right next door to my groomer, and I kept meaning to return. I did give him a favorable review on Yelp, not that that would necessarily make or break him.

I'd like to remind people to frequent businesses you appreciate just being there: like Casa Adela, like Army and Navy Bags on Houston street, like whoever your favorite shoe repairman might be.

This is a reminder to myself as well, but really, people: this is where you get to vote with your dollars. No $tarfucks for me.

I live on 6th between A and B and stopped in several times a week. The owner was heading back to Japan for a bit but had said someone else would be running the shop in his absence. Hope that's still the case! Really nice guy and great coffee.

Tom moved to Japan but sold the shop to a new owner. I believe it should re open at some point...
