At the South Street Seaport: Ice Rink, tree lighting and another VBar

Just mentioning a few things happening at what's left of the South Street Seaport in case it's of interest...The Seaport Ice Rink returns today, and the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. You can find more info here.

In other news, VBar, which has a location on St. Mark's Place and First Avenue, is opening a location at the Seaport … at 212 Front St. (former home of, sob, Carmine's).

And what does the future hold down there? Here's a video with details, if you dare…

Who cares about the seaport? It was always an open-air mall, owned by a company in Boston, no less! Now it's going to become a different open-air mall. Does anyone from the East Village even go there?

I went there in August to see the free show with Black Bananas -- aka Jennifer from the Royal Trux. And I saw Bass Drum of Death there in the summer of 2013. I went with a couple of neighbors.

The future holds people racking up credit card debt on liquor and experiences they can't afford.

south street used to be an historic site with a great one-story pier building, the fabulous fulton fish market, a low-key mall that sold all sorts of items and food at a reasonable price. it had some wonderful restaurants and bars.
the first new mall building was a failure and had very little to do with south street. now they're going to turn it into an even bigger mall only this one will be very high-end and south street will be another stage set for tourists. once a place to sit and watch the water and perhaps grab a bite will be another boring glass celebration of money to be spent. it will have nothing to do with what south street was or is.

A fish market might be many things, but "fabulous" isn't one of them!

I will go down there a few times a year. Jeremy's is oK if you hit it at the right time. I loved Carmine's, the Bridge Cafe and pre-renovation Paris Cafe.

The free shows on Friday nights in the summer are excellent. Very under-publicized. Aside from the few free shows in TSP, you won't find anything like that for free in the EV.

I have gone to the TKTs Booth at the Seaport for half price tickets to shows. There are never any lines, and it is more convenient than braving the nightmare and hours-long lines of the Times Square location.

and, to add to blue glass, there's going to be plenty of...drumroll..luxury apartments. This is about as pure an example of fascism under bloomberg, of gifts to private corporations on the public dim.
