WE HAVE BACKBOARDS NOW IN TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK

Progress to report at the Tompkins Square basketball courts! Last week, workers installed the backboard supports. This week, the backboards arrived. Perhaps if all goes well, we will have the hoops (and nets maybe???) next week!

The court also received another coat of black…

Workers started digging up the Tompkins Square Park basketball courts on May 29. City officials said that the courts were expected to reopen by the end of June, when NYC schools were out, per DNAinfo.

Oh, and a courts-are-closed sign finally arrived Monday, two-plus months into the project…

According to the signs, the exercise equipment is off limits through Aug. 12 as well.

As previously cut-and-pasted, the New York City Parks Department teamed up with YouTube for the renovations. YouTube is funding the operation, estimated at $300,000.

I hear that the YouTube vids shown on the backboard might occasionally stutter a bit....

....and no one will know why.

You must be pretty excited, to use all caps in the headline.

They close everything and then don't show up for a month and change. Now they show up late but worked until at least 7 last night. The exercise bars are off limits because the construction crew includes Curly, Moe and Larry given the amount they got done in a day.

I'm going to have to blame Parks for getting the contractor. If Youtube / Google was in charge of and publicly responsible for getting this done quick it would have been done in 4 days. Parks dept has some good people, the daily maintenance staff year round in the park are cool except when someone wants to go home and they decide to close the kid areas very early or they lock an old lady in the 10th st area after dark. This has to be some clown contractors with no incentive to prioritize screwing up for basically the whole summer.

Here's hoping the exercise people clip the fence again - which they may have already if this morning is an indication.
