NYPD apparently helping crack down on abandoned-looking bikes

EVG reader Mike H. on the Ninth Street spotted these flyers this morning on non-abandoned-looking bikes along East Ninth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D…

Per the sign:

"Please be avised due to the number of 311 calls and community complaints regarding the bikes on the sidewalk which have been left for extended time and seem to be abandoned.

You are requested to remove the bikes to a proper location within the next three (3) day from today (September 16, 2015) otherwise they will be deem abandoned and Department of Sanitation will remove and discard."

Hmm, not sure if these are legit NYPD signs or the creation of an annoyed resident. Anyway, per the signs, people have until Wednesday to move the bikes… Anyone spot these bike flyers elsewhere?

Probably a good idea for the city to be proactive on this to head off an expose by the Post. ("Even abandoned bikes say de Blasio has been a failure...")

Based on all the grammatical errors in that flyer, I'd say it's 100% authentic.

I wish these so called "quality of life" campaigns involved fining intoxicated people outside of bars and restaurants every weekend. Oh I forgot, the EV is the dumping ground for millennial soon to be alcoholics and all that liquor license tax is just to good to cut off.

Thank you! I consider myself "avised"

These are clearly not legitimate.

Oh snap! Looks like someone is trying to exfoliate the situation.

So if your bike is dirty, that makes it look 'abandoned'? What is that, the Life-Style Police?

This is an NYPD scam to get pricey bikes for free (some they put up for auction, some they keep, some they resell and pocket the money from.)

I could see a $3000 bike being taken away in the name of "it's abandoned". Btw how does one know if the NYPD took away the bike/the bike was taken away from being deemed "abandoned"? Define that word. Is there a note saying "We took your bike" in so many words? What bullshit. Fuck DeBlasio for carrying on the Bloomberg nanny state.

Why not require a bike ID? This way if your bike is gone, you can type in the bike ID and see if NYPD took it. True they'll pick and choose which ones to make available for return (cuz x amount of them are scamming scumbags) but it's worth a shot to check and see if they put it on the list. A bike ID would also be good for identifying reckless bikers i.e. people who ride their bike on the sidewalk, blaze through a red light etc.

Oh brother - I hope it hasn't really come to this being a police priority...

Anonymous said...

God help us if that is an authentic notice from the 9th precinct. I know it is a small matter but the verbal and grammatical ineptitude on display here (to say nothing of wildly misguided priorities) makes me want to buy a few more deadbolts for my door. These so-called people are in charge of "protecting" us.

Was anyone choked, thrown to the ground, or pepper sprayed while these fliers went up? No. The NYPD was not involved.

What's a phone for? ... said...

I don't suppose that anyone posting here called the 9th Precinct to ask about the flyers that were printed using the official NYPD seal, huh?

Anon 12:46: "A bike ID would also be good for identifying reckless bikers i.e. people who ride their bike on the sidewalk, blaze through a red light etc."

Should the bike ID be shown in blinking LEDs?

Oh What's a phone for?!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAH

Have you ever actually tried to call the 9th Precinct?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAH

The phone is for taking a picture of the flyer and bringing it into the 9th precinct. Sometimes the desk sergeants will talk to walk-ins without a heavy dose of smarmy arrogance.

Good luck reaching a human being at the 9th Precinct by phone.

(Is it just me who thinks a genuine human being should actually answer the phone at each precinct? I find it massively unsettling to dial my precinct and get routed through a $&%# phone tree "menu".)

I think these are fakies, the real ones are big yellowish stickers that are usually stuck around the frame and usually from Sanitation.
Most likely a business that is 'blocked' by these bikes or consider them an eyesore... of course since its chained to a street sign usually the city will remove them when they want so a complaint to 311 is what the whiner probably made and printed these to 'expedite' the removal.
Having said this; there are a shit ton of abandoned bikes all over the EV, or hoarders keeping them on the streets for parts... I've seen practically new bikes that look like they were ridden a few times and left for months, must be nice to hav money to throw around like that.
No wonder ShitiBike became a mild success for the majorly lazy.

I'm with 2:56 PM. Due to the grammatical gaffes, I'm suspecting--and really hoping--they are not from our NYPD.

Impersonating the police - isn't that like a felony or something?

I agree with one of the commenters. The ineptitude of this letter is staggering. Grammatical and structural errors are rampant. Whomever wrote this needs to attend a class covering the mechanics of basic english; this would include run on sentences, improper usage of adverbs, comma splices, and point of view among others. As far as the bike situation is concerned, I am at a loss. It is strange many would abandon their bikes and not collect them. Weird!

Beware of the local organized bike thieves based around 9th and C.

I live on upper Avenue A and couldn't sleep on Friday night because in the wee hours of the morning there was a group of girls laughing in unison every few minutes and screaming and wailing. Did anyone else hear them? But the police have time to go after bikes that look like they might have been abandoned. Give me a break. This neighborhood is unlivable because of the party crowd--not homeless people or bikes that look like they have been abandoned!

All you have to do is press zero. It's not hard.

"Whomever wrote this needs to attend a class covering the mechanics of basic english."

... as does the author of that sentence for, contrary to widespread belief, "whomever" is not a formal variant of "whoever," but has a specific syntactic function in formal (well, pretentious) English, and it is impossible to use it more incorrectly than Anon 9:44 did here.

As for logic, well, it may seem "strange many would abandon their bikes and not collect them," but it would be even stranger if they both abandoned their bikes *and* collected them.

Tell me about it, soon everyone living here will be a student or still 20 something. I hear guys and young women yapping and laughing (at that age everything is apparently funny especially when drunk) they are either on their buildings roof or a garden apartment and have no idea or don't give a shit that other people live next to them. I have been in contact with the worst offending building next to me, 331-533 on E 12t street, the super sometime stays over and breaks up roof parties but he lives elsewhere so this is not a solution. These kids are paying top dollar to live here and the landlord is not likely to enforce and rules of conduct and kill the geese laying golden eggs. I make 3-4 complaint to this building every weekend via the 311 app. I am trying to build a case against them so the police will take this seriously and possibly fine some of these assholes one day.

are they going to start doing something about construction sites that are not active too? especially the ones that have consumed the sidewalk? Just look at n7th and Bedford Ave - this is a blight that everyone should be clamoring about in a pedestrian centric city.

Boy, did I get bitch slapped. Sorry, for saying whomever instead of whoever. You are simply a mean troll.

Remember- They're cops. NOT English majors. But still kinda iffy.

Anonymous said...

There are fake Parks Dept. signs in Tompkins Square Park also, telling people not to feed the pigeons.

Anonymous said...

Nobody's expecting "english major" level stuff we are talking about basic written communication skills. Supposed to learn that shit in junior high and high school.

Anonymous said...

This is in response to numerous 311 complaints. If you want the dumb chicks to stop cackling or the construction sites to fix their shit then pick up the phone, tell your neighbors to do the same. Whining behind your computer screen isn't going to garner action.

All of the comment above are wrong. Step out of your neighborhood and the city once in a while. Don't be so angry. Bikes will go. They turn East Village into somewhat respectable neighborhood eventually.
