Reader report: New York Healthy Choice has apparently closed on Avenue C

An EVG reader notes that the gates have been down for at least 10 days now (perhaps longer?) here on Avenue C and East 11th Street.

The grocery, which sold fresh produce, meats and seafood, opened on Dec. 20, 2012 via the owners of Yankee Deli across East 11th Street.

Previously on EV Grieve:

This closing really bums me out. This was my place to get fresh fish and vegetables allowing me to avoid a supermarket or long walk. The people where really nice too.

I am assuming that the up and coming demo in the rapidly hyper gentrifying Ave C uses Fresh Direct. In addition, this store, also too small, did not have the “brand” so beloved by this demo. I see in the future a Starbucks or a 7-11 there. Win/Win.

It's been closed for at least a few weeks now..

They are re-opening with a smoothie and salad bar according to the cashier who worked there and is now over at Yankee Deli - I don't think it's closed for good!

Most the people over on Avenue C don't use Fresh Direct as most of the building over there are not doorman buildings. This place was ok for fresh meat and fish, but nothing special beyond that. The quality of the fruit was nothing to write home about. The owner also has a bodega across the street with a pizza place next door, and another bodega down the block. They'll be back with something else no doubt.

They are just refurbishing! They said they will be reopening in 2-3 months. Hopefully sooner.

In "Sty Town", no doorman buildings but Fresh Direct has a very strong presence there with the ideal demo as well.
