The Ess-A-Bagel signage has arrived, but the opening date has been postponed

The sign is up now (as of last week) at Ess-A-Bagel, 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street in the Shoppes of Stuy Town.

However, the original February opening date never obviously happened. According to the new issue of Town & Village (story not online yet), David Wilpon, one of the owners, said that there have been some unnamed obstacles that have pushed back the timing. He's now looking at a May opening.

Meanwhile, renovations of the space continue. "We are plodding along," he said.

I have been going to Ess-a-Bagel for 25 years. Their bagels are great, but there was one thing missing: a toaster. If they are finally willing to toast, I can do a Kickstarter for them to get one.

One word: whatever.

Giovanni, I have to disagree. Ess's bagels are perfection, toasting them would mar their beauty. Please don't give them a toaster. Toast them at home if need be.

I think they're way overhyped. And their customer service is deplorable. The only thing they have in their favor is you were young and free the first time you ate one

I just passed by, it doesn't look they could open this place in two months if they tried. I bet they won't open until summer at the earliest. And tell Giovanni I didn't see any toasters.

@ 12:22 PM Wow. So true. Poetic.

On a sign note; that sign is harder to read than the sign at the Broadway - Houston fruit stand.

@ 12:22 PM: For something to be poetic, doesn't it have to have some truth to it? Ess-a-Bagel was always good. I never had one in my youth, so I wasn't eating memories. Doesn't mean you have to like them, for your own personal reasons.

I just heard that the delays are due to some financial issues, the new store is costing more than they anticipated and that's why it's taking so long to re-open. I wouldn't be surprised of they try to do a GoFundMe.

First they were supposed to open in Febriary, then they said mid-May. it's May 16th, and they still look like they have barely even started on the construction. Any idea when they will re-open?

One of the workers said they are opening June 30. For those that care, they showed me the toaster, well the box anyway.....they will be toasting!
