[Updated] Man gunned down outside the Lillian Wald Houses

A 22-year-old man was found dead from gunshot wounds outside a courtyard of the Lillian Wald Houses on East Sixth Street between Avenue D and the FDR at 1:52 a.m., according to published reports.

According to the Daily News, "The victim was found with multiple shots to the gut."

No arrests have been made. The victim's name has not been released pending family notification.

Updated 10:45 a.m.

DNAinfo reports that the victim was known by the nickname "Coke Wave." Investigators believe this may have been a drug-related shooting, as the man was reportedly carrying crack cocaine.

Said one resident who lives near the crime scene: "I'm hearing gunshots two or three times a week out here. No matter how many times you hear them, it's still scary. Gunshots don't have no name. It's like these guys don't fear cops or nothing."

The victim's name was Michael Rodriguez.

Updated 6/21

DNAinfo reports that a man has been arrested for the murder of Rodriguez.

Fuck. This is terrifying. I often walk past this in route to the East Side River Park to run. I don't know what to say. Violence is never the answer. I hope the perpetrator is caught and apprehended. It makes me wonder if walking past it now is a good idea. Often, the people I see, who conjugate near the lobby seem to be up to no good.

The D is for Drugs. This is the second murder on Avenue D in the last 2 months, and it's not even summer yet. Witnesses saw 2 guys running from the scene covering their faces with their t-shirts. Hope they find and lock up the killers soon and clean up this open air drug market before a drug war breaks out.

Cops will arrest the dealers when a white person catches a stray bullet

So tragic. I really feel for Lillian Wald residents who have to live in constant fear of such incidents. I also jog past there to get to the river but it's not unsafe during the day; I've never worried about people "who seem to be up to no good" (sorry, anon 10.35am, but what about the people "conjugating near the lobby" makes you think they're "up to no good"?). It's the residents who come home late at night from work, from walking their dogs, or anything else, who are unfortunately in danger.

This contrasts so strongly with the other post today about >600K apartments being sold just 2 blocks north, on D & 8th. Who in their right mind would spend so much money for an apartment in that spot? If I had >600K, man, so many areas to live where you'll get a lot more bang for your buck...

Anyone walking to the river should walk through Stuy Town or to Houston first. These projects are a mess and you're making a mistake walking through them. There is a reason there are flood lights setup illuminating the area.

This might be a good location for that gunshot-tracking audio system the police have been trying out. (I forget the name of it.) I also hope residents are calling 911 when they hear gunshots. I used to be little shy about that myself but no more.

@ 12:22 PM is a bot.

1:23pm,

These "projects" obviously have major problems, but walking down sixth street to the East River is not unsafe (unless you are in a turf war with rival drug dealers).

@2:37PM Really? It's not unsafe to walk down East 6th St? Tell that to the family of Ruan Wen Hui who was murdered on 6th St near Avenue D just 2 years ago. He wasn't in a turf war with any drug dealers, he was just walking home.

Family mourns Ruan Wen Hui as police hunt suspect in deadly assault on E. 6th St.

10:35am, you mean congregating (conjugating is what one does to verbs... )
It's not necessarily safer crossing the FDR at Houston or at Stuy Town-- traffic is a nightmare for pedestrians. At least 6th & 10th streets have bridges.
Random violence is still pretty rare, though as Giovanni sadly points out when it is random it is even more tragic & frustrating.
My advice, same as it has been for 27 years: heads up, walk with a purpose, don't be rude.

@9:50pm: Yes, heads up, walk with a purpose, don't be rude, BUT also UNPLUG your damn headphones/earbuds and pay attention to your surroundings.

Two words:

Community policing

Four more words:

Cops on the beat

This shit ends with both.

9:50: I've used the bridges on 6th and 10th Street, on wheels. I would not use them at night, and I've been walking the streets of the East Village for decades. Even during the day, those bridges give me the jitters.

There is no hope with Dope the throwback days of the 70's and 80's are here again for what a Bag of Wine and Dine

Funny, half the time y'all are wistful for the good old days, when the 'hood was more "colorful" and had more character than a fleet of Maclaren double wides rollin' down the street but when things get real again check out all the whining. The CBGB airport diner fits you types more snug than you realize.

There is a big memorial set up in the projects between 5th and 6th St. with about a hundred of those Sanataria candles and pictures of Coke Wave on display, yet no one who lives there will even cooperate with the police to find the killers.

The juxtaposition, as previously mentioned, of big-bucks-real-estate with this particular housing development is just mind-boggling. I live on 6th between B&C, btw.

Hey dumbass a 1:44pm no one misses the drug dealing/drug dealers, we miss the art and law abiding citizens who never harmed anyone who created and supported it.

That is called spot-shotter and it's surprising that it hasn't been installed there yet.

But all this tech shit and all the cameras haven't done anything to deter crime or degenerate behavior.

The best defenses are to be aware and observant of your surroundings and cops walking a beat. And as Jane jacobs once wrote, the residents have to watch too.

And the reported "22" yr old man was my cousin who was actually "21" basically didn't even live his life and got his life taken for what ever reason and in all honesty they will most likely not find out who did this because my cousins labeled a drug dealer. Neither Ruan nor Michael deserve any of it

I had the pleasure of teaching Michael. He was a fun loving kid with a great mind. To the media and those that read this article he has been portrayed as "coke waive"; a hardened drug dealer gang banger. In reality, he was a sweet young man with a lot of potential but not a lot of opportunities. My thoughts are with his family and friends. I am hoping that there are not any reprisals for his murder.
