347 Bowery getting its zinc supplements

Just taking a look at the schmancy, Annabelle Selldorf-designed 347 Bowery ... where the zinc panels started arriving at the 13-story luxury building at Third Street late last week...

And eventually one day, No. 347 will look like...

And here's more about the five homes that will reside here:

The four duplex units and penthouse triplex each have a central spiraling staircase and suspended catwalk which overlooks the main living space and provides a separation between the master and secondary bedrooms.

According to Streeteasy, only one of the units is currently on the market — a three bedroomer for $7.5 million. As previously noted, the $17-million penthouse (a record $$$$ for the Bowery) is already in contract after just three days on the market.

The homes will sit atop a two-story commercial base, which will be — FYI — "clad in light gray Kolumba brick complementing the zinc panels of the tower."

347 Bowery has risen at the former spot of the Salvation Army's East Village Residence.

Previously on EV Grieve:
The Salvation Army's former East Village Residence will be demolished on the Bowery

Whatever happened to that really ugly hotel planned for the Bowery?

Looks like 347 Bowery will be home to a 13-floor mixed-use residential development

The future of 347 Bowery (sorta!) revealed

Let's take a look at 347 Bowery, now and in the future

The Bowery is a hot mess. At best, there is some uniformity with The Standard and the Cooper Union building. But these Blade Runner buildings, competing both for the same physical foot print apparently and the "who wore it worse" scrap metal look ... the only thing I can imagine that's worse than squinting out your window at a shiny, light reflecting silver wall obliterating the view once had, is the rest of us gawking back at those wrecks for decades to come.

It's just too early to take in these dueling horrors... ;)

Q: Why tie up all of this capital for so few people to live there?
A: But what do I know.

Does someone perchance believe that spelling Kolumba that way will make it look any less like cheezy krap?

NOTORIOUS - you win the gold star for today!

The new rich who buy these apartments have no taste. It's just about money and stupidity.

I suppose it is some sort of warped justice that this new out-of-scale monstrosity has covered up most of the south-facing windows, and infringed upon the privacy of the other out-of-scale monstrosity. you know, that building with the gated entrance on 4th street, which is behind the lovely, landmarked Germania Insurance building on the Bowery.

@Gojira I bet the letter C doesn't find this naming convention very inclusive! I thought the new New York City was supposed to an inclusive, safe space for EVERY letter?!

Anyhoo... if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sit at Astor Place and wait for the self-spinning Alamo to return while enjoying a refreshing acai stick.

That buildings 3rd store pool also gets a shadow and just had years of construction. Champagne problems.

@9:06, tying up capital is basically the point. Seems less risky than the equities markets at the moment. Nice work if you can get it (and don't give a crap about the neighborhood, of course)...

@Gojira - why learn something when you can just complain, as usual?
I was curious about the name too, and discovered, from the manufacturer's website: "Kolumba™ was developed in 2000 in cooperation between the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and Petersen Tegl for the Kolumba Museum in Cologne, Germany. Today, Kolumba™ bricks are used in buildings all over the world."

@2:52 PM Whew! Thank you for clarifying. I don't know about you Gojira, but that 'k'onundrum was going to keep me up all night long. Now if only there was an explanation for the nightmarish design of the building itself.

It looks like I'll be up all night after all...

Anon. 2:52 - Here's a hot flash for ya, I really don't CARE why it's called Kolumba. Cheezy krap is cheezy krap, no matter where it's made, who designed it, or what it's used for. Like the 1928 New Yorker cartoon sez, "I say it's spinach and I say to hell with it." Now go play in traffic, there's a dear.

NOTORIOUS, taking your comment under serious consideration, I have begun a Change.org petition to change the name of this place to New York Kity. That oughta pull in the rubes!

looks like its made from the same crap they make out of 711 and chase banks...

Selldorf is one of the best architects working these days. her firm is behind the new condos nearby on Lafayette. The biggest problem here is the conjoined twin look of these two buildings. The hotel just adds to the mess this block has become. I know technically these buildings are on The Bowery but I kind of think of them as part of the luxury Bond Street ghetto of designer buildings. Bring back 7A!

@Gojira And people think New Yorkers are rude. We Kare!

PS The acai sticks were a total bust. OFFICER TUBBS slurped them all up before I arrived. All they had left were the Chopt Skewers™ and if you've had one chopped salad on a stick, you've had 'em all.

I wonder if anyone will actually live in the apt? I've discovered, during the course of my investigation into the selling out of Manhattan Isle, that many of these penthouse apartments are financial holdings for wealthy investors. No better place to park a portion of your portfolio ($17 mill) in a very expensivepenthouse on Bowery. That could be flipped with minimal effort in 2 years for $20 mill and you'd never have to step foot on that filthy heinous construction ridden street.

awesome just what this city and this world needs more of.. LUXURY housing for wealthy douchebags who just absolutely need to have a crib in the now-deemed "cool" neighborhood. let's just displace all non-millionaires and force working class and poor people to cram into overpriced slums 100 miles away from the actual cities they whose cultures and neighborhoods they built for generations. let's make room for rich entitled brats with zero respect for anyone while they yell and scream all night, pissing and vomiting on people's doorsteps, and ringing every buzzer at 3am waking up everyone trying to find their dickhead friend "Brad". fuck these people.. i seriously detest all of these rich scum bags... and honestly how could you not? how do they not hate each other for being such vapid pieces of shit offering little to no substance to the world except to operate as vampiric coolhunters, jumping on everyone else's cultural bandwagon and steering it off a cliff time and time again.. and they can afford it, their daddy pays for it all so they just continue on and on appropriating others people's cultures and displacing them from their neighborhoods.. all the while doing so with absolute entitlement best they're better than we are.
