EVG reader Sheila writes in: "Peter Cooper, advocate for public education, seems to be going down in flames today."

No one to our knowledge has claimed responsibility for the paper fire just yet...

I understand if students are not happy with the current administration, but why blame Ol' Peter for it? Instead they should be putting a halo around his head.

I believe it is a response to the current nominee for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. DeVos has a history of promoting religious schools and unregulated charter schools over public education.

Which can only be seen as a bad thing by someone who a) is blinkered by their own public education and b) for some strange reason missed the whole public-education-in-America-is-complete-bullshit memo. Is our children learning? No. No, they is not.

It's odd indeed when the very same people who always seem to be squawking about change this and change that inevitably run right back into the arms of been there, done that, didn't work the first time, second time, or the third time but let's cross our damn fingers and pray as we try and try again.

Please look into Betsy DeVos' history and beliefs. The opposition is about her specifically. Even Republicans are opposing her appointment.

Agreed, there are many problems with public schools in many parts of our country and city. They need to be examined more thoroughly and solutions considered, as well as how money is distributed to districts.

However, as Secretary of Education, we need someone who actually believes in education and not just money-making schemes for private companies and supporting schools that do not teach science and actual history.
