Noted

An EVG reader shared this from outside the Dunkin' Donuts on First Avenue at Sixth Street. (This is on the Sixth Street side.)

On Tuesday, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced the guilty plea of Croman, a landlord with 47 buildings in the East Village. Under the terms of his plea, Croman would serve one year of jail time on Rikers Island and pay a $5 million tax settlement.

A slap on the wrists—you naughty, naughty boy.

He'll probably get out on weekend passes with one of those "house arrest" manacles.

Even though Croman deserves jail time, stories like his only promote the notion that the problem with real estate is bad landlords. The landlord/tenant relationship is a hold-over from feudal times and should be eradicated.

And replaced with what? A free-for-all? Housing run by the biggest wasteful entity on the planet - government? It is easy to say something must be eradicated without proposing a replacement that would work more effectively.

landlords are cowards/bullies----they will/would find a prison stay extremely trying---this sets a wonderful precedent for tenants---YAY!!!

Anonymous 9:51,

I can't detail how housing should work in a blog comment, but yes, public housing would be a large component of any plan to eliminate an outmoded relationship.

And do you honestly think the current system is effective? There is nowhere in the country where a person making minimum wage can afford a two-bedroom apartment. Nowhere. Even if the minimum wage was raised to $15, this would not change. The problem is the way real estate functions under capitalism. You don't have to have a ready-made plan in mind to see the problem that exists.

This was a very delightful week in predatory landlord and developer failure news with Croman's incarceration and the tanking of the Mr. Purple luxury hotel.

Croman deserved a year for EACH building he owns. THAT would have sent a very effective message.

11:09. No, you don't need to have a ready-made plan, but it would help. Come up with one, post it somewhere and share the link. I'd love to hear it.
