Someone decided to spraypaint "Shame on you for selling veal" on the sidewalk outside John's of 12th Street, the 109-year-old Italian restaurant near Second Avenue.

Now I know I'm having veal for dinner tonight. Definitely in 'parm' form and most definitely out of spite.

I'm a meat eater, and I am ok with a world without veal. Not worth it.

There are about 5,000 Italian joints in the Tri-State Area and they all serve veal. You'd better get to work if you plan to do this to all of them. Or are you all tuckered out from your big night of "activism"?

I'm a vegan, and I'll even admit this person was misguided; veal is a byproduct of the dairy industry, and it would be wasteful to not use a male calf that would otherwise go into a landfill.

Also, the restaurant has a separate vegan menu, so I think the spray-painter might choose their battles more carefully.

[Lastly, what's with all the "Anonymous"es? It's pretty disgusting that everyone is too lazy to even log in with an alias.]

They’re chained at the neck so they can’t turn around or move more than a step forward or backward. All they can do is stand up and lie down. This is done so that they don’t develop muscles so that their meat stays very tender. Twice a day they are given some liquid food. This food contains chemicals that will help the babies survive under these awful conditions. Except for feeding time, they are all alone. . . They spend their entire lives in the dark in little stalls until they’re big enough to be killed and turned into veal – usually around 16 weeks old (about 4 months).

When the calves are old enough to be killed, they are forced to walk to trucks that will take them to the slaughterhouse. Because they were never allowed to exercise, they have trouble walking. People use electric prods to force them into the trucks. When they are too weak, they are chained around the neck or one leg and dragged.

The owner of John's deserves better. The nicest person,who has kept the staff, structure and menu intact for ages. No one
is forced to eat there or order veal.

This whole comments sounds like a brilliant metaphor for the American educational system, except at least these poor animals have much shorter lives by comparison to the brain dead, crippled zombies walking around living in total delusion.

Man this is tough. Love John's and so appreciate and enjoy the vegan menu. But, veal is horrific and tragic and really should be left in the past. Anyone eating it "out of spite" is truly moronic. It doesn't even make sense - what do you have against a day old baby calf?

I mean, it IS hypocritical of John's to try and appeal to vegans while serving meat. I've always thought so! Why not just become a vegetarian Italian joint? We could use some more of those in NYC!

Super misguided and obnoxious graffiti. This place is historic and yet they still have made vegetarian dishes prominent enough to put on their sign! This would be the last place I would be protesting.
