[Updated] Reader report: Christmas tree market's generator damages mosaic pole on 2nd Avenue

The Christmas tree vendor arrived after Thanksgiving on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and Seventh Street... EVG reader Russell K. pointed out yesterday that the stand's generator, chained to the light pole, has damaged Jim Power's intricate mosaics here (one of 80 in the neighborhood)...

This chipped artwork was pointed out to one of the workers with the suggestion that they move the chain to prevent further damage over these next 24 days. As of today, the generator remains in place. Updated: They moved the chain off the mosaics after several days.

In unrelated news from this corner, the NYPD has removed the light tower that had been illuminating the sidewalk since mid-October to ward off the reportedly unruly travelers/crusties that had been congregating along Second Avenue.

I noticed yesterday the NYPD light had been moved down to 2nd Ave & 3rd St. Not sure why.

Where do the krusties go in winter??? It is almost like you can tell the seasons by their migration.

Jim Power's work deserves more respect than that; I would certainly not buy from that tree vendor. And I hope Jim can repair it, though of course he should not have to do so, b/c the mosaic should not have been damaged in the first place.

I hope someone is saving the loose pieces.

I have seen Krusties in midtown, one yelled at me because he thought I was taking his picture then shut up when I observed his expensive looking android phone. I also saw a group of them on a South Queens bound train

They are still here. They are just migrating.

I wouldn't buy from any tree vendor; they're all [expletive] hillbillies as far as I'm concerned.

For far too long, Crusties camped out under my window on 2nd Avenue, and I was gifted with hearing many hours of their conversations. They often talked of winter trips to Mexico and South America. Really.

The fact that nothing was done after the damage was pointed out just reinforces the idea that these transient tree sellers are trashy carnival folk. If you sell Xmas trees here for a couple of weeks and this doesn't describe you, #notallcarnies #eyeroll, calm down and maybe go talk to your brethren about how to be a respectable visitor.

Like I literally never agree with anything ScubaDiva says but YES

These people owe Jim Power an apology and should offer a plan to fix this damage. Props to Russell K for brining this to our attention.

They go to SF and LA mostly. These folks buy Greyhound tickets and ride across the country. If you buy 14 days in advance and avoid the holidays you can get to LA for $160 or so on Greyhound. Its not that expensive.

Yes, by all means stop the street tree vendor, make them cease destroying the mosaic. Jim Power has an inspiring life story, artist, veteran, community minded, battling illness with courage. I am not a big fan of his art though because originally he was just essentially taking over outdoor public property without any permission, like a light pole and putting his rough glass and mosaic pieces stuff all over it. Maybe it was the time I leaned on a pole absent mindedly in Astor Place and found my hand covered in blood from the sharp edges of his "work".

Oh god you're one of those anti-muralist, anti-grafitti public citizens, yeah? Well, some of us appreciate the selfless beautifying (or at least interesting-ifying) of public space. And how are these Christmas tree vendor carnival-folk foolios NOT "taking over outdoor public property" with their aggressively secular sidewalk-blocking forest-killing crap?

sowwy you cut your hand :(
