I walked out with a huge stack of dvds for $25.
Last night I walked by and the place was just about totally cleaning out inside. everyone can go back to their digital fetish now, you've gotten rid of phone booths, phone books, record and book stores, nothing in its place but deadly alcoholnygrumpnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-56497464965151285782014-08-26T19:46:29.757-04:002014-08-26T19:46:29.757-04:00Great post. They did have “The Gore Gore Girls” in stock. I was young, perhaps the same age as the writer. And the attitude I got from the people who worked in the rental department, was unnecessary and tedious. My area of interest was superior to what the rental clerks knew about. Yet, they always made me feel unwelcome. Still, It was an amazing place, and if one knew what one wanted, one could be direct and to the point, and the interaction with the staff could be kept to a bare minimum.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-33287650646426455572014-08-25T13:57:47.884-04:002014-08-25T13:57:47.884-04:00Great piece! These people were the biggest most judgemental dbags walking gods green earth. Unless you wanted some obscure foreign art film they were rude and obnoxious. There's a world of difference between great local shops forced out by rent increases and bros and places that are just poorly run, provide bad service and are no longer needed. Kims is the latter. Not every mom and pop/local business is a wonderland that should be grieved or have petitions to save it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-55045308888887388042014-08-25T13:22:36.713-04:002014-08-25T13:22:36.713-04:00@anon 10:25 am: I don't know, I guess differen...@anon 10:25 am: I don't know, I guess different people had different experiences, but in the five or six years I was a "member" of Kim's on St Mark's I was never treated with anything less than courtesy. Even when I rented "Alvin and the Chipmunks". Even the time their computer database got hosed with my $20 or so in "Kim Bucks" and the clerk just added most of that back when I said I had lost it.

It wasn't the type of place where they would often ask "Can I help you Sir?", but then again I wasn't looking for that type of interaction.

But sending the collection to Italy instead of keeping it local was a disappointment. Still, it was Kim's to give, not mine.I'd like something with lesbian snipers at a cocktail party, maybe a musical, would you happen to have that?noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-73318994469889604352014-08-25T11:23:20.824-04:002014-08-25T11:23:20.824-04:00Great read, thank KellyGreat read, thank Kellyvzabuserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11547457692788084346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-33278688996452195272014-08-25T10:35:13.196-04:002014-08-25T10:35:13.196-04:00Very cool story.Very cool story.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-76187368160382918922014-08-25T10:25:49.555-04:002014-08-25T10:25:49.555-04:00I'm going to go with "worse." I hated having to rent from Kim's because I (and most others) was treated with such distain by the rude people they seemed to go out of their way to employ there. I hate when local businesses like Kim's are forced to close, but I certainly don't feel that way about Kim's.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-50753694745948437812014-08-25T07:46:16.282-04:002014-08-25T07:46:16.282-04:00For better or worse, Kim's has been part of my...For better or worse, Kim's has been part of my East Village life these past 27 years, starting with the video store on Avenue A.

I will miss Kim's.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
