Remembering Louise Nevelson at the Nevelson House on 7th Street

Rentals got underway back in May at the all-new 222 E. Seventh St. — now with two additional floors — between Avenue B and Avenue C.

The address (before the previous building was gutted and rebuilt) served as a home and studio for sculpturist Louise Nevelson in the 1970s.

The building is named in her honor — the Nevelson House.

And there's now a plaque out front with more details about her time at No. 222...





The plaque reads in part...

During the 1970s her art studio was on the 4th floor of this building. ... She hosted many parties with guests like Andy Warhol and Ray Johnson here. Neith Nevelson, her granddaughter, is an artist ... Neith lived and painted on the 2nd floor.

The building has been renovated and remains as a place of inspiration for those who live within its walls.

Streeteasy shows the monthly rent for units ranging in price from $4,195 to $7,750.

Rentals are underway at the all-new 222 E. Seventh St., a building originally thought to be condos here between Avenue B and Avenue C.

As we pointed out previously, the address was the onetime home and studio of famed sculpturist Louise Nevelson. Which explains this building's name — Nevelson House.

Workers first honored her memory by demolishing the previous four-floor building here.

Streeteasy shows seven units ranging in price from $4,265 to $8,146, an entire floor at 1,455 square feet.

Here's a description of that unit:

The scaffolding and construction netting came down yesterday at 222 E. Seventh St., showing the new-look condoplex here between Avenue B and Avenue C...

Workers had gutted the previous, rather nondescript (see below) 4-story brick building ... and added two new floors.

In total, there will be eight condos inside, per work permits filed with the city.

When the new development first revealed itself in 2011, it was named the rather jaunty Villa Capri, set to be ready in 2012. Not sure if that's still the name plan. We haven't seen any details about pricing or amenities for the new homes just yet.

More like Gut Renovation Watch here on Seventh Street between Avenue B and Avenue C.

This townhouse had been on the market for several years. At last look in December 2014, the asking price was $3.75 million. That listing noted:

This townhouse is the lowest price townhouse in East Village and requires TLC. Renovated townhouses in East Village sell between $5.5- $7.0 million dollars so there is an opportunity to make millions on this property.

However, it appears that the building never found a buyer, per property records.

As you can see, workers have gone the hardcore TLC route, stripping the now open-air building down to the bricks...



According to the approved permit on file with the DOB (in their all-CAP style): INTERIOR RENOVATION OF EXISTING ONE FAMILY WALK-UP DWELLING AND REPLACEMENT OF EXISTING FRONT BRICK FACADE WALL.



This is the second building on the block to receive a gut rehab. No. 222 will be home to an extended 6-floor building with 8 residences...

It was all the way back in October 2011 when we first heard about Villa Capri, a new residential building coming to 222 E. Seventh St. just west of Avenue C.

The sign eventually disappeared, as did any chatter about the project. However, in December 2013, the city signed off on the application for the new building. Plans show that the current single-family residence will nearly double in size… with an additional two floors on the way. The plans show eight dwelling units in total.

And the point of all this is to say work has started at No. 222, which looks rather hallowed out now…



No word just yet if the development is still going by Villa Capri, which sounds like a resort in St. Lucia or something.

As we pointed out previously, the address was the onetime studio of famed sculpturist Louise Nevelson.

However, this project apparently lives, as Dave on 7th hears … Indeed, the DOB signed off on the new building late in December.
