Remembering Louise Nevelson at the Nevelson House on 7th Street

[Photo by Bobby Williams from Sunday]

Rentals got underway back in May at the all-new 222 E. Seventh St. — now with two additional floors — between Avenue B and Avenue C.

The address (before the previous building was gutted and rebuilt) served as a home and studio for sculpturist Louise Nevelson in the 1970s.

[The former No. 222]

The building is named in her honor — the Nevelson House.

And there's now a plaque out front with more details about her time at No. 222...

The plaque reads in part...

During the 1970s her art studio was on the 4th floor of this building. ... She hosted many parties with guests like Andy Warhol and Ray Johnson here. Neith Nevelson, her granddaughter, is an artist ... Neith lived and painted on the 2nd floor.

The building has been renovated and remains as a place of inspiration for those who live within its walls.

Streeteasy shows the monthly rent for units ranging in price from $4,195 to $7,750.

Bringing down 222 E. 7th St. brick by brick

Workers continue to chip away at the building here between Avenue B and Avenue C… there's been quite a bit of progress since we checked in on the project just last week…

The new 6-floor building with 8 residences will one day look like this…

Dave on 7th figures that sculpturist Louise Nevelson created this piece — Dawn's Wedding Chapel II from 1959 — now in the collection at the Whitney while living and working at No. 222…

[Updated] Work underway on the new residential conversion on East 7th Street

[October 2011]

It was all the way back in October 2011 when we first heard about Villa Capri, a new residential building coming to 222 E. Seventh St. just west of Avenue C.

The sign eventually disappeared, as did any chatter about the project. However, in December 2013, the city signed off on the application for the new building. Plans show that the current single-family residence will nearly double in size… with an additional two floors on the way. The plans show eight dwelling units in total.

And the point of all this is to say work has started at No. 222, which looks rather hallowed out now…

No word just yet if the development is still going by Villa Capri, which sounds like a resort in St. Lucia or something.

As we pointed out previously, the address was the onetime studio of famed sculpturist Louise Nevelson.

Updated 10:10 a.m.

Oh! Somehow we missed the rendering on the plywood... here's what's to come... (thanks Dave on 7th!)

Asbestos abatement on East Seventh Street, then a new 6-story building

On Friday, notices arrived on the door here at 227 E. Seventh St. near Avenue C...

As you can see, the asbestos removal completion date is listed as March 13, 2013 ... Meanwhile, it turns out there are permits on file with the DOB for demolition of this structure ... then a new six-story "masonry building" here... (the DOB disapproved the first round of plans last month)...

And, per the DOB, plans for this building date back to 2004 ... though the job was withdrawn then...

Meanwhile, across the street at No. 222, all is seemingly quiet at the moment on the plans to turn the building into the Villa Capri condos...

The sign that appeared last fall is gone...

[Dave on 7th]

The DOB disapproved the plans for the extension/renovation in March.

First residential driveway coming to Seventh Street

A few weeks ago, Dave on 7th told us about the big changes coming to 222 Seventh St. near Avenue C with the arrival of the Village Capri condos...

Anyway, Dave on 7th just took a closer look at the rendering (something that we didn't do...)

Lookee. That's a garage (a small one anyway — clown car size). And driveway.

A lot of work to be done here for this to dethrone the Novogratz-designed-penthouse-home-with-a-driveway on East Fourth Street as the It Driveway of the Neighborhood of the Moment.

Villa Capri condos coming to Seventh Street

Big news on Seventh Street courtesy of Dave on 7th... changes are coming to 222 Seventh St. near Avenue C...

The following sign just appeared...

So it looks like a new building with additional floors... and by fall of 2012? Seems awfully ambitious... Looks as if the new owner bought the building in 2008. According to the Corcoran listing:

Four story building built in 1901 with an additional two stories of air rights. Currently configured as a three family with an owners duplex, and two floor through two bedroom apartments. Large south facing garden. Excellent opportunity to create a architectural dream home.

Streeteasy has the closing price at $3.2 million. We're tracking down more details on all this now.

Meanwhile, word is that this was the onetime studio of sculpturist Louise Nevelson. A look at Property Shark notes that she did own the building at one point.
