M & J Asian Cuisine coming to 14th and B

Workers put up the new signage Friday at the restaurant opening soon on the southeast corner of Avenue B and East 14th Street.

We don't know too much else about the new place (ownership, opening date, etc.) at the moment.

The previous tenant, AlphaBet Cafe, closed this past April 1.

As for that AlphaBet Cafe signage, workers stuffed it into bags on the curb.

Thanks to ace East Village photographer (and EVG Facebook friend) Michael Paul for the tip and above photo.

Also, hat tip to EVG regular Crazy Eddie who passed along this news of the new tenant a few months back.

Reader report: AlphaBet Cafe will not reopen

[April 1]

AlphaBet Cafe closed on April 1 … signs on the diner at East 14th Street and Avenue B pointed to a renovation/remodel …

[April 1]

However, yesterday, EVG reader Patrick heard from the building's landlord that AlphaBet Cafe will NOT be returning… the gate was up and workers were inside cleaning out the space. The landlord said that the Cafe owners had been behind in rent … and they voluntarily turned over the keys ahead of an eviction.

The landlord indicated that he did have an interested party in the restaurant… and hoped to have it rented in the coming weeks.

The folks at AlphaBet Cafe seemed to have a tough time last year … the DOH closed them down several times for various infractions …

AlphaBet Cafe is closed for renovations

Several readers told us that AlphaBet Cafe closed Tuesday here on East 14th Street and Avenue B… signs point to a renovation/remodel …

Not sure if this is an actual closed for renovations … or a "closed for renovations," where we never see the place open again … A new operator was on the February CB3/SLA docket for a new liquor license, but they were scratched from the agenda.

AlphaBet Cafe had a few bouts of the DOH last year… however, there's nothing on file with the DOH now pointing to a health-related closure.

Updated: AlphaBet Cafe closed again for now [NOW BACK OPEN]

Last month, AlphaBet Cafe on East 14th Street and Avenue B had to close for "difficulties with the gas," according to a sign on the restaurant's front gate. (While that reason may be true, there was also a DOH-mandated closure — 55 violation points.)

The Cafe reopened the next week... only to close again last Friday — again via the hand of the DOH. Documents on file with the city show inspectors handed out 76 violation points ... including for the following:

• Food not cooled by an approved method whereby the internal product temperature is reduced from 140º F to 70º F or less within 2 hours, and from 70º F to 41º F or less within 4 additional hours.

• Appropriately scaled metal stem-type thermometer or thermocouple not provided or used to evaluate temperatures of potentially hazardous foods during cooking, cooling, reheating and holding.

Yesterday, a reader spotted workers collecting their things from the space. According to one worker, AlphaBet Cafe is not going to reopen, that the owner has had enough. Calls to the restaurant go unanswered. And there isn't a note on the gate about any closure. We do hope that they return — always a good, inexpensive option here.

Updated 10/3

A reader spotted the owner here late Wednesday afternoon ... working and putting up new signs in the windows saying closed for repairs/renovations ... Perhaps a good sign for a reopening here.

Updated 10/5

The restaurant is back open. A reader just had breakfast there. A restaurant employee here did tell a local resident last week that the Cafe would not return.

AlphaBet Cafe back open on East 14th Street and Avenue B

[Bobby Williams]

Just noting that AlphaBet Cafe, a fine little place for an inexpensive meal, is back open ... they were closed for several days due to a gas problem, according to signs on the door.

Gas problems temporarily KO AlphaBet Cafe on 14th and B

Over on East 14th Street and Avenue B, AlphaBet Cafe, a fine little place for an inexpensive meal, has been closed of late... the sign out front points to a problem with the gas...
