More burgers for the former Black Iron Burger on 5th Street

There has been a lot of activity recently at 540 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B... the former home of Black Iron Burger.

New owners are taking over the space... and they will appear before CB3's SLA committee on July 13 for a new beer-wine license for the address (Black Iron also served beer and wine)...

We don't know who the applicants are just yet (the questionnaires haven't been posted online). However, we're told they will have a menu similar to Black Iron Burger — milkshakes, fries and burgers.

Workers have cleared out the inside of the space, which had been used for storage in recent years (photo below by Stacie Joy)...

The East Village location of BIB was the first for the brand, opening in 2008 (with new ownership taking over in 2013). The three other outposts remain open.

What's going on at Black Iron Burger on 5th Street?

The Black Iron Burger at 540 E. Fifth St. near Avenue B is entering its fifth month of closure for renovations... and some regulars are wondering if it might reopen at all.

Locals haven't noticed much activity inside the space. And now, there's a Con Ed notice affixed to the front door.

"Gas shutoff notices aren’t ever good news during 'renovations,'" wrote Brian Van, who shared the photo in this post.

While this location remains on the Black Iron Burger website (along with new outposts coming soon to West 32nd Street, West 54th Street and in Chicago), the phone is no longer in service. We reached out to them via email about the status here. Will update if/when we hear back.

[Updated] Black Iron Burger remains closed for renovations

Several readers asked us what was going on over at Black Iron Burger on East Fifth Street near Avenue B. It hasn't been open in recent weeks. It closed on July 11 for some summertime renovations ... the original outgoing message said that they'd reopen on July 19.

However, the space is still closed... the outgoing message still says July 19... and we haven't heard any updates on when BIB may reopen...
