Bowery Hotel celebrity....REVEALED

After consulting with celebrity sketch artists and people who pay attention to this stuff more than I do... I now know who it was in front of the Bowery Hotel Friday:

Amanda Seyfried.



OK, after looking at her bio, she's familiar to me now...

Oh my God! (OMG!) It's...It's... that woman from that movie or TV show or band or something!

So yesterday I'm walking on the Bowery...and I see two paparazzi, two fanboy types with cameras and one large black sedan thingy in front the of the Bowery Hotel. Celebrity! So I stop. I stood there for about two minutes. Passersby asked me who we were waiting for. I always offered a different response. Madeleine Albright. Snooki... Oops. Hotel doors open, I set my camera to "take blurry photos" and....




I had no idea who this woman was. Blond. Pretty. Petite. That really narrows it down. Maybe she played someone's sassy best friend in a movie? I just don't know.

Your chance to get inside the New York Marble Cemetery

On Sunday, the New York Marble Cemetery (or Second Avenue Cemetery) is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A little background in case you don't want to visit the Web site:

It is the oldest public non-sectarian cemetery in New York City. Most of the 2,070 interments took place between 1830 and 1870; the last was in 1937. All burials are in 156 below-ground vaults made of solid white Tuckahoe marble. Although there are no gravestones, the names of the original owners are on plaques in the surrounding walls. Their descendants may still be buried here.

The cemetery is only open on the fourth Sunday of the month, April through October. (It won't be open if it's raining.) It's on Second Avenue between Third Street and Second Street.

If you're lucky, you can get the caretaker to discuss the Bowery Hotel... (Spoiler: "a bunch of tourists who think they're slumming it on the Bowery in a $500 hotel room!")

Why the Bowery will be "Ugly" today

The Times has a piece on how hoteliers often turn to movies for design ideas.

For his largest Manhattan property — the Bowery Hotel, in the East Village — Mr. MacPherson turned to an even more surprising source: Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” (1980), a horror film that takes place in the Overlook, a fictional hotel in the Rocky Mountains. At the Bowery, “There’s a bit of the feeling of the Overlook — hopefully without the creepiness,” he said. “The idea is to create something that is old and grand and hopefully slightly bigger and more storied than its guests and owners.”

Mr. MacPherson relied on another Kubrick film, “A Clockwork Orange” (1971), when he chose elements for the Bowery’s bellman uniforms, which evoke the film’s violent hooligans.

Though the literal associations with the film might elude visitors, they will probably know that they are someplace visually distinctive, Mr. MacPherson said. “It’s very much as if you’re building a set and everyone becomes a character in the film you’re making there,” he said.
