787 Coffee and Calexico now open on 2nd Avenue

As a follow up to Tuesday's post... both the Calexico outpost and 787 Coffee cafe have opened on Second Avenue between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. (The previous post has more background detail.)

And thanks to everyone who passed the news about the openings here!

Coffee and Calexico for 2nd Avenue

Get ready for a Coffee and Calexico combo on Second Avenue between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. (To be clear, these are separate businesses who are just new neighbors.)

The new outpost for the Calexico chainlet that we've been writing about this past year (here and here) at No. 99 is ready to open. Signs on the front note that the Cal-Mex restaurant is closed for private parties at the moment...

Updated: A reader says that Calexico is now in soft-open mode.

Meanwhile next door, the 787 Coffee shop is coming together... the Coffee signage just arrived (H/T Steven!) ...

UPDATE 7/26: 787 is now open

As reported on July 8, this marks the second 787 outpost for the East Village. The shop, which grows and roasts its coffee in Puerto Rico, arrived on Seventh Street near Avenue A last October.

Another reminder that a Calexico outpost is opening on 2nd Avenue

The Calexico outpost coming to 99 Second Ave. is moving closer toward an opening... EVG correspondent Steven spotted these open-call signs outside the restaurant yesterday here between Fifth Street and Sixth Street... not sure if they'll be looking to continue hiring today...

The owners — brothers Brian, Dave, and Jesse Vendley — received the OK from CB3 last August for a liquor license for this space, which was previously home to Brick Lane Curry House. (Brick Lane moved one block to the south.)

The Cal-Mex burrito-beer chainlet currently has a handful of NYC locations (Upper East Side, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Red Hook, among them) as well as in Detroit — and Bahrain.

2 storefronts shaping up on 2nd Avenue for Calexico and Brasserie Saint Marc

Renovations continue at 99 Second Ave., where Calexico, the Cal-Mex burrito-beer chainlet, will be opening an outpost here between Fifth Street and Sixth Street.

The owners — brothers Brian, Dave, and Jesse Vendley — received the OK from CB3 last August for a liquor license for this space, which was previously home to Brick Lane Curry House. (Brick Lane moved one block to the south.)

Calexico currently has a handful of NYC locations (Upper East Side, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Red Hook, among them) as well as in Detroit — and Bahrain. No word on an opening date in the East Village.

---

And over at 136 Second Ave. between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street, you may have noticed the signage go up in recent days for Brasserie Saint Marc ...

We don't know too much about this establishment, other than a lot of work is going into getting the former Bar 82 (RIP March 2013) into restaurant shape. The construction plywood went up three-plus years ago — May 6, 2016 to be exact.

The applicants, listed as Greg Lebedowicz and Jerry Lebedowicz, were previously licensed for Nitedreams in Greenpoint from 2003 to 2008.

In July 2018, CB3 OK'd a full liquor license for No. 136. Here are a few items from the meeting's official minutes (PDF here):

• "The applicant has stated that this location will be a restaurant which will host Ukrainian events, meetings and dinners by organizations from the longstanding local Ukrainian community."

• "It will operate as a full-service French American Ukrainian restaurant, with a kitchen open and serving food during all hours of operation."

• "Its hours of operation will be 8 A.M. to 2 A.M. all days"

There is a basement space here fitted with a bar and dining room for those meetings and events.

Thanks to Steven for the photos yesterday!

Brick Lane Curry House closes ahead of move down the block

Brick Lane Curry House closed after service last Thursday here at 99 Second Ave. between Fifth Street and Sixth Street... and workers quickly cleaned out the space...

The restaurant confirmed on Facebook that they are moving one block to the south — 79 Second Ave., the former Heart of India space. No word on a reopening date just yet.

This marks Brick Lane's third East Village location. They moved from Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. in August 2014.

As for No. 99, the owners of Calexico, the Cal-Mex burrito-beer chainlet, were on last month's CB3-SLA agenda for a liquor license for this address.

Calexico currently has a handful of NYC locations (Upper East Side, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Red Hook, among them) as well as in Detroit — and Bahrain.

The questionnaire posted to the CB3 website (PDF here) shows proposed hours of 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. The layout features 15 tables inside and six tables for a sidewalk cafe ... plus a 14-seat bar.

Calexico currently has a handful of NYC locations (Upper East Side, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Red Hook, among them) as well as in Detroit — and Bahrain.

As for Brick Lane Curry House... there is an unconfirmed rumor on the block that they will relocate a block to the south... to the former Heart of India storefront...

Brick Lane Curry House made the move from Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. in August 2014.

The August CB3-SLA meeting is tonight at 6:30 in the Perseverance House Community Room, 535 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.
