Davey's Ice Cream officially debuts today in new 9th Street shop

After two days in soft-open mode, Davey's Ice Cream officially marks its grand opening today (Friday!) on Ninth Street.

As previously reported, Davey's decamped from its First Avenue storefront of 8-plus years in March ... and selected 309 E. Ninth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue for the new shop.

And tonight (Friday!), from 6-9, there's a Grand Opening Free Scoop

Davey's is open Sunday-Thursday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. ... with a midnight close on Friday and Saturday.

First sign of Davey's Ice Cream on 9th Street

The familiar ICE CREAM lettering has arrived at 309 E. Ninth St., the new home for Davey's Ice Cream here between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Owner and local resident David Yoo said that a hand-painted logo on the front window will be the finishing touch. No word just yet on an opening date. (You can follow @daveysicecream for updates.)

After eight-plus years, Davey's closed its original outpost at 137 First Ave. in March. At the time, Yoo promised that the shop would be opening elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Owner and local resident David Yoo made the announcement Friday on social media.

After eight-plus years, Davey's closed its original outpost at 137 First Ave. in March. At the time, Yoo promised that the shop would be opening elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Hopefully, there will be space here for the Davey's Ice Cream lettering from the previous shop...

After eight-plus years, Davey's Ice Cream is closing its original outpost at 137 First Ave.

Today is the last day here between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street. And there are free scoops.

However, owner David Yoo promises a return. According to the Instagram post announcing this closure: "Stay tuned for our new East Village relocation announcement!"

Davey's Ice Cream set for Sept. 13 grand opening on First Avenue

[William Klayer, from June]

Summer is winding down (or not!) ... thought we'd check in with David Yoo, the proprietor of the incoming Davey's Ice Cream at 137 First Ave. between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street.

Yoo, a graphic designer who switched careers to ice cream shop entrepreneur, originally had hoped to open in late July or early August... We asked him for the scoop (sorry, that was awful): The grand opening is set for Sept. 13.

Here's more:

"We're pretty late into the summer season, so we've been revising our seasonal flavors for the late-summer/early-fall."

And!

Our year-round flavors include:

- Mexican vanilla bean (real vanilla)
- chocolate chocolate
- strong coffee (Kenya single-origin coffee beans from Birch Coffee)
- roasted pistachio nut (real pistachio)

Our rotational flavors reflect seasonal themes using the best available ingredients at farmer's markets when possible. These flavors will change often:

- camp s'mores (graham cracker ice cream with chocolate chunks and roasted marshmallows)
- fresh peaches & cream
- fresh sweet corn with salty caramel swirl
- blackpepper watermelon sorbet

"We make the ice cream entirely from scratch in the store. We use the best milk and cream from Battenkill Creamery and crack egg yolks into our ice cream mix every morning," Yoo said. "I know It's been taking me some time to get this shop open, but I want to be absolutely sure I'm providing only the freshest and highest quality ice cream out there. It will be worth it! I hope..."

More details on Davey's Ice Cream, opening later this summer on First Avenue

[William Klayer]

Last Wednesday, we noted that the sign arrived for Davey's Ice Cream at 137 First Ave. between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street ...

We reached out to the proprietor, David Yoo, to learn more about the shop...

About his ice cream:

I will be making small batches of traditional and seasonal ice cream flavors from scratch in the shop, meaning I will be mixing and pasteurizing my own custom ice cream mix. It's making ice cream the hard way!

I lived in the East Village while in school (Parsons, I'm a former graphic designer), and I knew this was the location for my venture. Rent is getting out of control in EV/LES, but I'm excited to give it a shot here.

About his change in careers, from graphic designer to ice cream store owner:

The idea to switch career gears was definitely a lightning bolt moment. I could have continued moving from studio to studio and do more of the same, or really try something different while still being creative.

Opening an ice cream shop has always been an inside joke of mine. When I realized there wasn't much of an ice cream scene in NYC like there is in Portland or San Francisco, I knew I had to try this. I finally left my studio, started making ice cream a little more seriously, wrote a business plan, completed the Penn State Ice Cream Short Course in January, and signed a lease shortly after.

I'll be the sole owner of Davey's Ice Cream. I'm also the business guy, ice cream dude, designer, PR, scooper, and janitor. It's all been a very interesting experience so far…

He hopes to open the shop by late July or early August.

Davey's Ice Cream opening soon on First Avenue

As we first noted back in February, an ice cream parlor was opening at the former dry cleaners at 137 First Ave. between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street ... the sign went up today, as this photo via EVG regular William Klayer notes... the proprietors are hoping to open next week... dunno too much about the place at this point other than that they specialize in small batch, handmade ice cream ... they have a coming soon website...
