Updated: East 12th Osteria closes on 1st Avenue, moving to the West Village

East 12th Osteria looks to have permanently closed. Someone removed the sign from the front door here on First Avenue at 12th Street...

EVG reader dwg said the dining room was cleared out on Friday.

Back on Dec. 12, the State seized the space for nonpayment of taxes. Eater reported that restaurant serving Northern Italian cuisine owed more than $190,000 in unpaid taxes.

However, without any notice, East 12th Osteria then resumed service several days later.

The restaurant opened in March 2013.

Updated
From restaurant's website: "East 12th Osteria will be moving to the West Village, and would henceforth change name to Osteria."

A spokesperson for the restaurant told us in an email:

We opened 2 days after NY State Department of Taxation and Finance shut us down. We've paid the principal amount months back, it is the interest and other fees that we're trying to negotiate down. 120% interest is a lot.

Having said that, earlier this month we chose to close down East 12th Osteria because we found a bigger location in the West Village, and will be opening sometime in the summer.

East 12th attracted regulars Ron Chernow... Preet Bhararra and Scott Stringer, lots of NYU faculty and gallery owners. We thank our supporters in the East Village — a warm welcome awaits them at our next Osteria, opening soon just a few avenues away.

East 12th Osteria resumes service

[Reader photo from Saturday night]

Multiple EVG readers have noted that East 12th Osteria is back in business... dinner service resumed last Wednesday evening here on First Avenue and 12th Street.

This comes after the State seized the space early last week for nonpayment of taxes. Those notices coincided with flyers stating that the restaurant will be relocating.

Eater reported that restaurant serving Northern Italian cuisine owed more than $190,000 in unpaid taxes.

Despite the back taxes, the State appeared to be willing to work it out with chef/owner chef Roberto Deiaco.

Per Eater:

Department of Tax and Finance spokesman James Gazzale says that they are still in contact with the owner and want to work out a plan to return the business. "We never want to see this happen," he says.

We reached out to East 12th Osteria for comment and will update when/if we hear back.

[Updated] East 12th Osteria has closed on 1st Avenue

Here's the sign that greets patrons at East 12th Osteria on First Avenue at 12th Street... the restaurant is relocating...

Chef/owner Roberto Deiaco served "elegant Northern Italian [fare] with a casual East Village vibe," per its social media description.

The relocation notice coincides with a posted Warning Seizure flyer via the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance...

The sign notes that the business has been seized for nonpayment of New York State Taxes.

The restaurant opened in March 2013. The space was previously held by the Fuji Apple deli, which closed in April 2011.

Thanks to dwg for the photos!

On East Third Street at Avenue B, Heart N' Soul opened Friday at the site of the former Mama's Food Shop...

The menu features the "Coastal Southern cuisine" of chef Dave Conn, who spend a good part of his life in the South.

Last Wednesday, East 12th Osteria, which serves Northern Italian fare via Roberto Deiaco, former executive chef at Armani Ristorante in the Armani flagship store on Fifth Avenue, opened its doors on East 12th Street and First Avenue...

Finally... Back in January, Candela Candela abruptly closed at 92 Second Ave, ... at the time, a resident of the building heard that Mermaid Inn would be expanding into this space. That was NOT the case... In any event, the Candela owners have unveiled a new concept ... a vegetarian restaurant called Local 92 ...

And it's now open...

Per the menu: "The words LOw and CALories merge together in traditional middle-eastern dishes..."

Anyone try any of these places? Any early reports to share in the comments?

[Updated] Plywood removal reveals East 12th Osteria on First Avenue

Several readers noted that the plywood has come down on the northwest corner of First Avenue and East 12th Street...

The space will soon house a restaurant serving Northern Italian fare via Roberto Deiaco, who was the executive chef at Armani Ristorante in the Armani flagship store on Fifth Avenue, per The New York Times.

In a dining preview at the Times in December, Florence Fabricant wrote this:

Mr. Deiaco describes the restaurant as a combination of old and up-to-date, with recycled wood and a tin ceiling coexisting with a steel and glass facade. And though the place is casual, the menu does not shy away from luxury, with truffles and foie gras.

Seems as if this has been in the words for some time. CB3 approved the beer-wine license for the address in February 2012.

The space was last held by the Fuji Apple deli, which closed in April 2011.

And on it goes... corner markets replaced by high-end restaurants serving truffles and foie gras...

The restaurant will open Wednesday.
