About the Haunted Halloween Party this Saturday at La Plaza Cultural

Little Missionary's Day Nursery on St. Mark's Place is hosting A Haunted Halloween Party at La Plaza Cultural this Saturday (Oct. 28!).

The annual event serves as a fundraiser for the school. The party is free to enter and open to all... there's a small charge for some of the games and activities... as well as for the food and beverages donated by the following local businesses: Mary O's (scones!), Bobwhite Counter, S'MAC, Veniero's, Gelso & Grand, the Grafton, Iggy's Pizzeria, La Palapa and Brooklyn Dumpling Shop.

You can join the Halloween action from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community garden on the SW corner of Avenue C and Ninth Street.

P.S.
The tattoos are fake...

Must be the season of the pop-up Halloween shop on Avenue A

Photos by Stacie Joy

The Halloween pop-up shop debuted a few weeks back for the third season at 70 Avenue A between Fourth Street and Fifth Street (between Cafe Social 68 and Mast).

Let's explore this further since it's Oct. 6 today (when did that happen?). The storefront seems fuller this year, with a little more creative use of the space...
We always enjoy seeing the soon-to-be popular costumes the children might wear this year ... (pretending we don't see Ben Franklin — nerds!)...
... and for the patriots among us...
Costume aside for a moment (note to schedule the colonoscopy)...
And perfect! As we're handing out tabs of acid this Halloween...
Parents, if you are buying the Moshe/Moses costume for your child, please note this bag only includes the hat, neckpiece and robe (tastefully accented with blue sequin at the shoulders). Per the fine print, the "optional accessories" include a beard, mustache and shepherd's crook. (To save money on a fake mustache and beard, we suggest your child stop shaving through Halloween...)
... and here's the always-popular costume representing the private equity firm that bought your apartment building...
The shop's hours are 2-9 p.m. daily...
Happy Halloweening!

Fall arrived at Key Food on Avenue A this past week... just one sign of the Halloween season around the grocery.  (And why would someone with straw hair smoke a pipe?)

Storefront shuffle on Avenue A

Photos by Stacie Joy

Yesterday we noted that Whim Golf has closed after a summer pop-up at 66 Avenue A between Fourth Street and Fifth Street.

What's next? The vintage shop that has been at 70 Avenue A is making the move to two storefronts to the north.

And 70 Avenue A — now with brown paper covering the windows — will be home for the third consecutive year to a Halloween pop-up shop...
No word just yet on the opening dates for either storefront.

Details about smashing pumpkins (not the band!) at La Plaza Cultural

This Sunday, you can bring your Halloween pumpkins, gourds and Jack-o-Lanterns over to the annual Pumpkin Smash... taking place from noon to 3 p.m. at La Plaza Cultural on the SW corner of Ninth Street and Avenue C.

Reps from the NYC Compost Project will be there to turn those (likely rotting) decorative items into compost for city parks and green spaces.

The event is rain or shine, and there are other family-friendly activities planned during the Pumpkin Smash.

Thanks to Steven for the photo!

A very Avenue B Halloween

In recent years Avenue B has been a solid corridor for trick-or-treaters ... and yesterday's Halloween festivities were no exception, as EVG contributor Stacie Joy discovered...

Carving out some quality time for Halloween at the Parkside

Photos by Stacie Joy

The Parkside Lounge was the scene of a recent bring-your-own-pumpkin (BYOP) carving competition ... and as EVG contributor Stacie Joy witnessed, it was a spirited affair here at the bar on Houston and Attorney ... with competitors taking the proceedings quite seriously...
... we don't actually who took home the trophies... but they all look pretty good...
