Joey Pepperoni looking closed on 1st Avenue

The Joey Pepperoni $1 pizza outpost on First Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street appears to be closed for good. There's a space for rent sign above the $1 on the marquee... the phone number is also out of service.

This location opened in August 2012, and lasted nearly four years longer than some people anticipated. (The storefront was on the market back in the fall of 2014.)

If this is a permanent closure, then it appears that the Great $1 Pizza War of First Avenue is officially over. Many $1s were lost during this challenging time in which we witnessed multiple sidewalk sandwich boards … the introduction of $1 drafts… and the legendary dancing pizza menu woman.

With JP's closure, along with the July 2014 departure of the 2 Bros. Pizza next door, Vinny Vincenz can have the block back again. (There's still nearby cheap slice competition with Papa John's a block away.)

The Joey Pepperoni closed on 14th Street on IHOP Way in February 2014.

The $1 pizza war is coming to an end on 1st Avenue

[Photo from July 18 by Michael Hirsch]

The 2 Bros. sliceria closed on First Avenue near East 14th Street back in July.

Now another nearby $1 pizza joint looks to be closing here between East 13th Street and East 14th Street this fall.

A listing appeared this week for 222 First Ave., home to Joey Pepperoni (Or Joey Guacamole per the listing photo!) across the street. (Asking rent: $9,500 plus key money.)

The 2 Bros. branch opened in February 2013, much to the dismay of next-door neighbor Vinny Vincenz, who had been there for 11 years. In response to 2 Bros.'s arrival, Vinny's started offering $1 slices.

We saw it all during the Great $1 Pizza War of First Avenue … multiple sidewalk sandwich boards … the introduction of $1 draftsdancing pizza menu women.

For now, victory goes to the 11-year-old Vinny Vincenz, who also unveiled a new sign back in the summer.

Wicked Wolfe BBQ arrives on East 14th Street

Any EVG reader was surprised yesterday to see $1 pizza back at the former $1 slice joint Joey Pepperoni on East 14th Street…

Turns out there are new proprietors for the space just west of Second Avenue… Wicked Wolfe BBQ will sell BBQ (duh), sandwiches and pizza…

They aren't officially open yet … only for pizza. An employee said that they just installed the smoker, and were still working on it… they'll also be moving the Snapple machine off the sidewalk…

And then there was one Joey Pepperoni's (within a few blocks of each other)

The Joey Pepperoni's location on IHOP Way East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue has apparently closed, Eater first noted yesterday.

This JPP popped up quickly back in November 2012, turning over an AT&T Store in about two hours.

Meanwhile, the business next door made sure to capitalize on the new-found cheap-pizza void on this side of the street…

JPP fans can still visit the Joey Pepperoni's on First Avenue between East 13th Street and East 14th Street, a location that was alive and well last night along with the other nearby $1 pizza options.

JPP on East 14th Street likely won't be the last $1 pizza casualty. We don't want to speculate on who might be next, but you can!

Important questions of our time

When did Joey Pepperoni on First Avenue start serving breakfast? And tacos? And wings? (We hadn't noticed!)

Also, has anyone tried any of the non-$1 pizza items?

Anyway. Just the latest (or not) development in the grim First Avenue $1 pizza wars.

Spotted outside Joey Pepperoni's this past weekend.

When will it end? Full-frontal nudity? Then what about the children?

Joey Pepperoni brings his $1 slice to IHOP Way

Well, that Joey Pepperoni $1 sliceria went up quickly at the former AT&T store here on East 14th Street just west of Second Avenue...

And this is the second JPP in the East Village ... with the one opening on First Avenue near East 13th Street in August. And this may be a record for turning over a storefront. One day it was empty, the next day it's a fully functioning pizza place. Not bad considering it usually takes the city about 7 weeks to show up and inspect a hand sink.

Anyway. Game on.

You've been put on notice, Nicoletta!

Haha. Kidding!

But seriously — has anyone tried JPP's? (And if you answer, then I promise to never refer to it again as JPP's.) Was curious how it compared to 2 Bros. or any other $1 or $1.50 slices... Or cardboard?

[Thanks to EVG reader Tony for the tip on the opening]

Joey Pepperoni now selling his $1 slice on First Avenue

An EVG reader tells us that Joey Pepperoni's Pizza is now open (festive balloon alert!) on First Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street... If you try it, then let us know how it is. Or, if you don't try it, then let us know what you think it is like ...

Joey Pepperoni bringing his $1 pizza to First Avenue

A branch of Joey Pepperoni's Pizza is opening here on First Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street... (this space was most recently Ikura Sushi...) There are a few Joey Pepperoni locations around the city... Midtown Lunch reviewed the $1 cheese slice at the Tribeca outpost.

The verdict: This was a good piece of pizza, and when you add in the $1 price tag it’s kind of amazing. The crust was really crisp and the cheese plentiful and slightly browned in spots.

And what's the verdict on the Joey Pepperoni mascot?

And the space next to Joey P's is for rent too...
