[Updated] SLA suspends Maiden Lane's liquor license; patrons spotted 'with no food other than crackers'

Updated 9/12:
Maiden Lane had their liquor license reinstated, and they also have new menu offerings.
---

Maiden Lane, the bar-cafe on the northwest corner of Avenue B and 10th Street, is temporarily closed after a visit by State Liquor Authority operatives on Thursday evening...

According to the legal documents affixed to the cafe's door, "patrons were observed sitting in the licensee's sidewalk cafe with no food other than crackers." The paperwork doesn't cite any other infractions.

As we understand it, there wasn't any warning here. The SLA agent made his or her observations Thursday evening and Maiden Lane was ordered to close later on Friday.

---Updated 8/11---

Here's the official allegation via the SLA:

On August 6th, investigators with the state's multi-agency task force observed the restaurant selling alcohol for consumption on the premises and 'to go' with just a 0.5-ounce package of oyster crackers — in flagrant violation of state requirements that substantial food be served to limit mingling in bars. Investigators documented six customers being served at a walk up bar at an outside window, approximately seventeen patrons drinking on the premises with only crackers, and another patron ordering two margaritas served with straws and no food, who then proceeded to walk across the street and get in a car.

---

Gov. Cuomo's recently enacted mandate directs that bars and restaurants must offer a "substantive" amount of food for patrons sitting outside their establishments ... including bars who previously didn't offer a full menu. Cuomo expounded on what constituted a meal — more than wings! — during a July 23 press conference...

As some bar owners have said privately, the SLA agents don't even seem to know what the rules are (is a salad a meal?) ... and the enforcements can be at the capricious whim of the agent.

Even before the COVID-19 PAUSE, Maiden Lane had a European-style food menu that included small plates of spreads and dips served with toast or crackers, salads, sandwiches and retail tinned seafood, which they sell through an advertised Tin Shop.

We reached out to Maiden Lane founder Gareth Maccubbin for further comment.

Maiden Lane debuts its sidewalk cafe

The folks at Maiden Lane, the 13-month-old cafe on Avenue B and East 10th Street, let us know that their sidewalk cafe opened on Tuesday ... with eight tables on the East 10th Street side facing Tompkins Square Park.

Maiden Lane now open full time on 10th and B

[Photo from April 28 by Shawn Chittle]

The folks at Maiden Lane passed along word that they received their liquor license yesterday... and are now open seven days a week — noon to midnight. (They were open for coffee and tea and stuff during the days going back to late April.) You can find their food and drink menu here.

The cafe took over part of the space on Avenue B and East 10th Street that previously housed Life Cafe.

And tonight...

Soft opening at Maiden Lane on Avenue B

Maiden Lane is in soft-opening mode now on Avenue B at East 10th Street... Shawn Chittle took a quick look inside...

The cafe is awaiting its beer-wine license at the former Life Cafe space. The partners in this new venture are East Village residents Nialls Fallon and Gareth Maccubbin. This is what Fallon told us about leasing this space last fall:

"We decided on the space for two reasons, the first being we didn't want to see the 7-Eleven-Starbucks scenario you mentioned happen there. Second, we wanted to be in an iconic space that carried on some form of community identity and East Village-ness. I am excited to create something new and make sure that the corner remains owned and operated by locals."

Maiden Lane hopes to open by the end of the week for lunch service

Over on East 10th Street and Avenue B, renovations are complete at the former Life Cafe space. The partners, East Village residents Nialls Fallon and Gareth Maccubbin, showed the space off Sunday afternoon to friends and family as a way to celebrate the end of the construction. (Gammablog was there, and has photos of the interior.)

The cafe is called Maiden Lane. Per Eater, they plan to serve a regionally sourced food menu. (CB3 OK'd a beer-wine license for them in October.)

We asked Fallon for an update.

"We are waiting on inspections and hope to open by the end of the week for daytime cafe service. Wine and beer license to arrive soon and then we will open for evening service."

The two partners have ample restaurant experience at two popular Mulberry Street eateries. Fallon was the general manager at Torrisi while Maccubbin held the same position at Torrisi spinoff Parm next door.

Maiden Lane coming to East 10th Street and Avenue B

We had the scoop last month on what would be taking over the former Life Cafe space on Avenue B and East 10th Street — a cafe/restaurant serving beer and wine with the working name of Yardbird (out of homage to Charlie Parker). An alternative to the woo.

Eater learned yesterday that they new place will be called Maiden Lane. (An homage to where the Federal Reserve is located in the Financial District?)

As we noted, the partners are Nialls Fallon and Gareth Maccubbin, East Village residents with restaurant experience at two popular Mulberry Street eateries. Fallon was the general manager at Torrisi while Maccubbin held the same position at Torrisi spinoff Parm next door.

Per Eater:

The pair were granted a beer and wine license at last month's CB3 meeting. They plan to serve a regionally sourced food menu that compliments their white wine and sherry-heavy beverage list.

Maiden Lane is eyeing an early 2013 opening.

Rejected names included: The Asset Backed Commercial Paper Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility Cafe

Speaking of Maiden Lane (and who does, really?), the Hotel Reserve opened last December...and now the hotel has a new restaurant with a name equally as sexxxy... a name that makes you just want to ...

...think of large bureaucracies, prisons, central banking systems... Federal Cafe? Does the Board of Governors appoint the chef?

Heh.
