Maison Kayser closes Union Square location

Maison Kayser has closed its outpost on Broadway between 13th Street and 14th Street. (Thanks to EVG reader Cecily Millen for the tip and photo!)

The Paris-based French bakery/bistro opened here in September 2016. As we noted at the time, EVG commenters were pleased by this arrival.

The door signage for customers, which includes an apology "for the inconvenience," lists five Manhattan Maison Kayser locations as well as news of a store coming to Hudson Yards.

Some EVG commenters were pleased by this arrival in the previous post on MK. For example

For those skeptics out there who fear the mediocrity of another "chain" bakery, please let me assure you that Maison Kayser is THE BEST Bakery in NYC. And, for those Olive Bread aficionados, be prepared for a doughy, soft, delicious, loaded with olives piece of heaven like you've NEVER tasted in your entire life. I'm delighted that Maison Kayser's will be closer to me in the East Village. MAGNIFIQUE!!

Maison Kayser announces itself near Union Square

As you can see, Maison Kayser rolled out the branded plywood at their incoming location on Broadway between 13th Street and 14th Street...

The French bakery/bistro will open here at 841 Broadway at the end of September, according to the MK Facebook page.

In 2013, Gothamist named Maison Kayser one of the city's 12 best bakeries: "And though chain bakeries can be forces to fear, we have to admit this spot whips up one hell of a baguette," they wrote.

This location marks the ninth now in the the city for Maison Kayser.

A Santander Bank branch opens today on 13th and Broadway; and where's the Maison Kayser?

Well, not terribly newsy or exciting. That another bank branch is opening.

The address was previously home to a Cosi and Cohen's Optical. In November, there were reports that the Paris-based Maison Kayser was opening a 3,000-square-foot bakery on 13th and Broadway.

Given the arrival of the bank, an EVG reader asked if the bakery was still in play.

In looking at the report from last November in the Commercial Observer:

Paris-based Maison Kayser has inked a 3,000-square-foot deal at The Feil Organization’s 841 Broadway, the landlord announced in a press release. That space will be split up between the ground floor and mezzanine level of the eight-story building at the corner of East 13th Street.

Maison Kayser signed a 15-year lease, and will open early next year. It’s joining such retail neighbors as Max Brenner Chocolatier and Santander Bank.

So you have to figure that Maison Kayser will be opening in the storefront to the north of the bank branch...

Report: Maison Kayser opening a large bakery on 13th and Broadway

Residents often say they wish there was another bakery around here. Not sure if this is what anyone had in mind.

In any event!

The Paris-based Maison Kayser is opening a 3,000-square-foot location on Broadway at East 13th Street, the Commercial Observer reports.

This will be the ninth location in the city when it opens in early 2016.

Here's some Maison Kayser background via the bakery's website:

Founded by Eric Kayser in Paris in 1996, Maison Kayser is an authentic artisanal French Boulangerie, meaning that bread and other baked goods are mixed and baked on-site all day long.

Recognized as one of the most talented artisan bakers of his generation, Eric Kayser has built his reputation on his passion for bread, the quality of his products and his incredible skill to combine authenticity and innovation in the world of French artisanal bakeries.

Born into a family of French bakers, dating back four generations, Eric Kayser started his baker apprenticeship at age 14. He was exposed very early on to the art of baking...

In 1996, he opened his first bakery, Rue Monge, in the heart of the Quartier Latin in Paris, France. It was an immediate success and as of today, Maison Kayser has over 100 shops in over 20 different countries!

The previous tenant on Broadway and 13th, COSI, closed back in the summer.
