Rite Aid on Avenue D empties out ahead of rumored closure

A tipster told us that the Rite Aid on Avenue D between Sixth Street and Seventh Street is closing.

During a visit late last week, two employees told us the following: "We don't know if we're really closing or not — they keep telling us different things." 
The store doesn't exactly scream "open for business." Many shelves are empty. One employee said shoplifting is a problem — not just here but everywhere. 
One thing still in stock... DVDs...
Last month, Rite Aid said it plans to close a total of 145 “unprofitable” stores as part of its optimization efforts ... and is reportedly "looking to save in administrative and labor costs and make improvements across payroll and the supply chain, with total savings expected to reach $170 million in 2023."

Rite Aid opened here in the retail space of Niko East Village, the new 12-story retail-residential complex, in late 2018 ... after a move from its previous home one block to the north.

The Duane Reade closed on Avenue D at Second Street in November 2019 ... eventually replaced by a USA Super Stores outpost.

And now, YOUR NEW RITE AID SIGNAGE ON 1ST AVENUE

After weeks of anticipation, the new Rite Aid signage/brandage has arrived at the outpost on First Avenue and Fifth Street. 

As you can see, gone are the blue and red chevron color blocks (sob!) with a new blue and green (Seattle Seahawks-esque) logo that includes a graphic of a mortar and pestle with an herbal sprig. 

This "integrated rebranding effort is part of Rite Aid’s RxEvolution strategy ... to transform the company into the leading whole health destination that treats mind, body and spirit," per a press release.

Your Rite Aid on 1st Avenue signage update

As a follow-up to Wednesday's post on the disappearing signage at the Rite Aid on First Avenue and Fifth Street...

EVG contributor Stacie Joy was at the store yesterday: "Crew reports new lettering and signage (to reflect new colors, font, etc.) should be up next week. They told me they have no plans to close, that all Rite Aids are being rebranded."
Workers smoothed over the marquee to make way for the new brandage/signage... which will look like this...

Look for the Christmas trees by Labor Day.

On Avenue D, Rite Aid completes the 1-block move to its new (former) home



The Rite Aid is now open in the retail space of Niko East Village, the 12-story retail-residential complex via L+M Development Partners on Avenue D between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...



The store relocated here one block to the south from its previous — and temporary — home in the base of the ground floor of Arabella 101...



With this, Rite Aid is back to its original home. The property where the Niko stands previously housed several one-level storefronts, including Rite Aid (and Shady's pizza!).

And so this Rite Aid chapter closes for now... and there will apparently be retail space available in the Arabella 101. (Maybe it's time to revisit that Kim's Video-interactive pizzeria idea for this space!)

Rite Aid signage arrives at the Niko East Village on Avenue D



The Rite Aid signage arrived back on Friday in the retail space of Niko East Village, the 12-story retail-residential complex via L+M Development Partners on Avenue D between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...



To recap: The lots previously along here housed one-level storefronts that included a Rite Aid, which relocated one block north to the ground floor of Arabella 101. Rite Aid had signed a lease to return to the retail space in this building.

The former Rite Aid at the site of Niko had a pretty cool underwater theme painted on its walls, courtesy of The Royal Kingbee UW.

As for Niko, the rentals are underway. Rents start at $2,800 a month and go up to nearly $6,000.

Condos at Rite Aid's new neighbor on 1st Avenue will range from $1 million to $6 million

As you may know, an 8-story condoplex — featuring 22 residences — is coming to the long-empty lot at 75 First Ave. between Fourth Street and Fifth Street.

To date, we'd only seen photos of broker Ryan Serhant's team in suits brandishing shovels at a groundbreaking ceremony ... and not any of the actual new building.

Now though, Colonnade Group, the developer behind the project, has released some renderings, as first posted yesterday at The Real Deal.

HTO Architects designed the building. The prices will range from around $1 million for a one-bedroom to $6 million for a three-bedroom. The amenities include a fitness center, lounge and library, private and common roof deck and bike storage.

As for No. 75's neighbor... the bears have been lined up for Valentine's Day...

7th Street residents angered after developer cuts down the wrong tree

Over at 79-89 Avenue D, L&M Development Partners have been prepping for a 12-story retail-residential building with 110 dwelling units here between Sixth Street and Seventh Street.

On Wednesday, residents at 274 E. Seventh St. said they were angered to discover that workers "mistakenly cut down a six-story tree" in the backyard of their co-op building.

A resident with knowledge of the situation said that L&M had a work order to remove one tree — from 278 E. Seventh St. However, the crew cut down that tree as well as the one behind No. 274.

The residents contacted the Department of Buildings via 311, and were told that it wasn't a DOB matter. The 311 rep suggested calling the police.

As for the loss of the tree, the resident said that an L&M rep confirmed they made a mistake and are prepared to do something for the co-op "within reason."

"What could possibly make whole the loss of the sole grace note of our backyard, shading our apartments in the summer, announcing the arrival of spring when it's buds peeped out, the golden light that filtered through its changing leaves in the fall and the shelter it provided squirrels, blue jays, sparrows and rare hawk visits?"

Former Avenue D Rite Aid has been demolished to make way for a 12-story building



Workers have wrapped up the demolition of several one-level storefronts, including Rite Aid (and Shady's pizza!), on Avenue D between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...





In January, the Rite Aid relocated one block north to the vacant retail space in the Arabella 101 building.

As for 79-89 Avenue D, the approved permits on file with the city show a building with a total of 96,038 square feet (7,868 of them for the retail component). There are 110 dwelling units listed.

L&M Development Partners, one of the groups involved in the Essex Crossing development at the former Seward Park urban renewal site, bought the three parcels of 79-89 Avenue D in 2014 for $12.5 million.

We have not seen any renderings for the new building just yet. GF55 Partners, whose area work includes Jupiter 21 and 48 Bond, are the architects of record.

Demolition permits filed to level the former Rite Aid and 2 other empty storefronts on Avenue D

On Monday, we reported that the Rite Aid on Avenue D has relocated one block to the north.

DNAinfo pointed out yesterday that there are now permits on file with the city to demolish the one-story storefronts at 79-89 Avenue D between East Sixth Street and East Seventh Street.

As previously noted, a 12-story building with a total of 96,038 square feet (7,868 of them for the retail component) will rise here. There are 108 dwelling units in the works. A spokesperson for L+M Development Partners confirmed to DNAinfo that the building will also feature some inclusionary housing.

Rite Aid relocates ahead of new development on Avenue D



The Rite Aid on Avenue D between East Sixth Street and East Seventh Street relocated late last week...



...just one block north to the vacant retail space in the Arabella 101 building...





The move is to make way for a 12-story mixed-use building ... three one-level storefronts will need to be demolished: the Rite Aid and the long-vacant laundromat and Shady's pizza...



The approved permits on file with the city show a building with a total of 96,038 square feet (7,868 of them for the retail component). There are 108 dwelling units listed. The Real Deal reported in May 2014 that L&M Development Partners could build to 96,400 square feet with an inclusionary housing bonus.

L&M Development Partners, one of the groups involved in the Essex Crossing development at the former Seward Park urban renewal site, bought the three parcels of 79-89 Avenue D in 2014 for $12.5 million.

We have not seen any renderings for the new building just yet. GF55 Partners, whose area work includes Jupiter 21 and 48 Bond, are the architects of record.

Here is the future of East 14th Street and Avenue A: 7 stories of residential and retail


Wow. Here we go.

As we first reported last December, eight parcels consisting of 222 Avenue A and 504 - 530 E. 14th St. (excluding No. 520) were leased for a 99-year period by the respective owner of East Village 14 LLC. City property records showed that Gary Barnett of Extell Development signed a 99-year lease worth $35.14 million to rent eight Sol Goldman-owned properties.

And the businesses have disappeared, including The Blarney Cove and Bargain Express.
