Sonic Youth at Central Park, July 4, 1992 (redux)

A partial repost of an EVG item from July 4, 2008...
On July 4, 1992, I saw Sonic Youth at SummerStage in Central Park. Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Arkestra opened. I remember SY being as frenzied as I'd ever seen them as they played a Dirty-heavy set. (The record was just about to be released.) I don't remember much else, except that I loved every minute of the afternoon.
Missing from the previous post — a video of the 66-minute set ...

And the setlist from the Sonic Youth website...

01. Teenage Riot
02. Burning Spear
03. Dirty Boots
04. Drunken Butterfly
05. Theresa's Sound-World
06. Youth Against Fascism
07. Swimsuit Issue
08. Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit
09. 100%
10. Kool Thing
11. Sugar Kane
12. Expressway to Yr Skull

There's a bootleg of the show here.

The Mountain Goats will be at the East River tomorrow; more SummerStage on tap

SummerStage takes a break from Central Park tomorrow (Saturday!) for a performance by the Mountain Goats at the East River Park Amphitheater.

The indie vets are currently touring in support of their latest album (No. 17!!!) "In League With Dragons," released in April.

The free show is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. More details at this link.

There are two other performances set for the Amphitheater this weekend:

Elisa Monte Dance
Friday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m.

Eddie Palmieri, Baby Power, DJ Sonni
Sunday, Aug. 11, 6 p.m.

Given the city's stormproofing demolition plans for East River Park, these are likely the last shows here until at least 2024.

Celebrate the 35th anniversary of 'Wild Style' style tonight at the the East River Amphitheater

There's a free SummerStage event this evening at the East River Amphitheater.

Here's more via the EVG inbox...

It’s tough to overstate just how influential Charlie Ahearn’s 1983 film, “Wild Style,” has been in the development of hip-hop culture. The evocative film culminates with an infamous, real-life 1982 concert that took place at the East River Amphitheater, in which the likes of Rammelzee, The Fantastic Five, and Treacherous Three, performed. Thirty-five years later, the stars of the film invite fans and friends to celebrate with them at that very place.

Featuring pre show hip-hop dance workshop with Fabel at 6 p.m.

Special Guests Include:
Almighty Kay Gee
Busy Bee
Charlie Ahearn
DJ Grand Wizzard Theodore
DJ Tony Crush
Eclipse
EZ AD
Grand Master Caz
Patti Astor
Rodney C

Note sure exactly what time the film screens (dusk?). The SummerStage website lists this event from 6-10 p.m.

The East River Amphitheater is in East River Park between Jackson Street and Cherry Street.

If this helps...

Sonic Youth at Central Park, July 4, 1992

On July 4, 1992, I saw Sonic Youth at SummerStage in Central Park. Sun Ra and his Arkestra opened. I remember SY being as frenzied as I'd ever seen them as they played a Dirty-heavy set. (The record was just about to be released.) I don't remember much else, except that I loved every minute of the afternoon. (No need for all the details!)

There is a bootleg release of the show with:

Teen Age Riot
Eric's Trip
Dirty Boots
Drunken Butterfly
Theresa's Sound-world
Youth Against Facism
Swimsuit Issue
Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit
100%
Kool Thing
Sugar Kane

I couldn't find any video from this 1992 Central Park show. But I did come across Sonic Youth playing "Kool Thing" in Hultsfeld, Sweden, on June 14, 1992 (Close enough!):

By the way, as you may know, Sonic Youth plays later today with the Feelies at Battery Park.

Updated: This week's issue of Time Out New York featured the following line prominently displayed on its cover:

Yes, Sonic Youth was a free event. But you needed to get your tickets in advance. Inside the same issue, you'll see in two places that, although it was free, you weren't getting into the show. SOLD OUT.

Guess no one told this to the person writing the cover lines.
