At The Nathaniel, named after a hated secondary character in an Ayn Rand novel

Speaking of Third Avenue and East 12th Street... the luxury rentals at The Nathaniel hit the market back in the summer.

Curbed took a tour of the building for a post yesterday.

Curbed clears up one minor mystery: Just who or what is The Nathaniel named for: Turns out it's for Nathaniel Taggart, who is the grandfather of the protagonist of Ayn Rand's 1957 novel "Atlas Shrugged."

Per the always reliable Wikipedia:

Nathaniel Taggart was the founder of Taggart Transcontinental. He built his railroad without any government handouts, and ran the business for no other reason than to turn a profit. He began as a penniless adventurer and ended up as one of the wealthiest men in the country. He never earned money by force or fraud (except for bribing government officials and throwing an opponent down a flight of stairs), and never apologized for becoming wealthy and successful. He was one of the most hated men of his time.

Perhaps, then, The Nathaniel will become the most hated apartment building of its time in the East Village?

Off to a good start! The Nathaniel's least-expensive offering is a $3,273 studio, which, Curbed notes, is just slightly less than the median rental price ($3,300) for an apartment in the neighborhood.

Here's part of the official news release that we received yesterday about The Nathaniel, the new luxury rental on Third Avenue and East 12th Street, which has apparently seceded from the East Village.

THE NATHANIEL LAUNCHES LUXURY RESIDENCES IN COVETED GREENWICH VILLAGE

(New York, NY) – The Nathaniel, a luxurious new development in Manhattan’s sought-after Greenwich Village neighborhood, has officially launched leasing for its rentals. The nine-floor building offers 85 residences ranging from studios to three-bedrooms. Douglas Elliman Development Marketing is exclusively handling the marketing and leasing for project.

Developed by YYY Third Avenue LLC, and designed by Karl Fischer with interior architects McCartan, The Nathaniel is located at 138 East Twelfth Street at the corner of Third Avenue.

“In Greenwich Village, you need to deliver a product worthy of the location” said Eli S. Weiss, a Principal with YYY Third Avenue LLC. “The finishes and amenities at The Nathaniel are best in class and create a boutique hotel atmosphere for residents.”

Uniquely modern kitchens feature high gloss cabinetry with wenge wood details, Caesarstone Blizzard White counters, Calacatta porcelain backsplash, paneled dishwashers and Liebherr refrigerators, and built-in wall ovens and cooktops. All residences also feature White Oak floors, generous closet space and individual washer and dryer, with private terraces in select residences.

Additional building amenities include a 24-hour attended lobby, access to The Nathaniel Club lounge, a stunning Sunset Deck complete with a reflecting pool, bicycle storage, and a private gym.

Residences are available for August 15 occupancy. Studios start from $3,345, one bedrooms from $4,615, two bedrooms from $6,950, and three bedrooms from $10,950.

Wow. A shame they don't know that this is actually Midtown South!

Also! Interior photos!

Oh, and if you are interested in rentals, here is The Nathaniel's website.

Over at 84 Third Ave. and East 12th Street, where the newly christened building The Nathaniel awaits completion, there is a notice up ...

...for a proposed, non-illuminated blade sign reading The Nathanial ...

Which is actually already in place.

As previously noted, studios here in the 9-floor luxury building start at $3,470; one-bedrooms start at $4,600; two-bedrooms start at $6,650; and three bedrooms at — !!!! — $11,500. There is also a rooftop reflection pool for reflection on how much your rent is.

As far as we knew, the Karl Fischer-designed 9-story retail-residential complex on Third Avenue and East 12th Street … was going as 74-84 Third Ave. …

[From November 2011]

Anyway! That was only temporary! Say hello to The Nathaniel at 138 E. 12th St. …

We learned about The Nathaniel (who or what is this named for anyway?) via an article in the Post yesterday about new luxury rentals.

Luxury indeed!

According to the Post (we didn't spot this part online), studios start at $3,470; one-bedrooms start at $4,600; two-bedrooms start at $6,650; and three bedrooms at — !!!! — $11,500.

Here's a description of the place via Luxury Rentals Manhattan:

[T]he apartments for rent at the Nathaniel boast generous layouts, custom high-gloss cabinetry, white oak flooring, and oversized closet space. The kitchens feature caesar stone white countertops and each residence is fitted with a washer and dryer for your convenience. Select residences at 138 East 12th Street also offer private terraces. Luxury amenities at the Nathaniel include a 24-hour attended lobby, private gym, bicycle storage, club room, and rooftop sun lounge with reflection pool.

As pricy as this seems (IS), The Nathaniel is still more affordable than the incoming Eleventh and Third across the Avenue.

The corner parcel on Third Avenue and East 12th Street where The Nathaniel sits was previously home to Nevada Smiths, Yummy House and a parking lot.
