Former space housing 1st bar for pregnant women returns to market on Avenue A

[EVG photo from September]

The corner retail space on Avenue A and East Fifth Street served as an advertising repository last October for some bar-finding app disguised as Gestations — "NYC's first bar for pregnant women."

The storefront has sat empty since East Village Pharmacy moved from here to 41 Avenue A in early 2011.

And now there's a new broker for the space…

So far, we haven't spotted the listing online at the Tower Brokerage website. And is the space next door that housed Twist for lease as well?

In any event, this is a good block for independent retail here between East Fifth Street and East Fourth Street … you have a coffee shop/cafe (Croissanteria), a housewares shop (Lancelotti), a used bookstore (Mast), a magazine shop (Ink on A), a gift shop (Alphabets), a dry cleaners … not to mention the lottery place and the liquor store.

NYC's 1st bar for pregnant women goes belly up on Avenue A

The month-long reign of this unfunny marketing campaign on Avenue A and East Fifth Street is over… so long to Gestations — "NYC's first bar for pregnant women"…

The ads for whatever the app was came down on Friday. The whole campaign seemingly came to a halt on Oct. 6, the last day that someone posted to the Gestations Facebook page…

Last we heard the long-empty storefront would soon be home to a veterinarian's office.

People behind Gestations still pretending to be opening a bar for pregnant women on Avenue A

From the EVG inbox from Friday evening…

Hi EVgreive,

People seem to have forgotten their Lamaze techniques and are panicking over the opening of our bar, Gestations.

In light of this recent media coverage, we thought we’d take this opportunity to give you a better idea of where we’re coming from.

Just like any other bar, Gestations’ only objective is to provide a specific segment of the population a place to gather, relax and socialize.

We are not advocating reckless behavior in any way — that is the responsibility of each individual — simply seeking only to provide a judgment-free place where people can congregate and enjoy a drink or two.

We’d love for you to learn more and get to know us a little better before passing any judgments and encourage you do so on Facebook, Twitter or [redacted] for exclusive photos, information, and the latest on bars like us.

Cheers,
Gestations Bar

The broker for the storefront told us that the building's landlord rented the space for the sign for a month. (You have a few weeks left to enjoy.) The bar's supposed opening date is Oct. 25.

The storefront at 72 Avenue A at East Fifth Street remains on the market. According to the active listing, the asking price is $7,800.

No, 'NYC's first bar for pregnant women' isn't opening on Avenue A

As we first noted on Thursday, signage appeared for Gestations — "NYC's first bar for pregnant women" — on the long vacant corner of Avenue A and East Fifth Street.

Seemed pretty evident that it was some kind of gag (despite the appearance of an authentic State Liquor Authority notice) complete with a Facebook and Twitter account and outgoing phone message.

The sign attracted some attention in the media…

The Post even assigned three reporters to the story

Per the Post:

The business hasn’t applied for a liquor license or other permits for the space, said Community Board 3 leader Susan Stetzer.
“They’re saying it’s a bar, but they haven’t applied for a liquor license.

At this point it’s nothing … Maybe it’s going to be a milk bar or a juice bar,” she said.

The fake bar also attracted attention in Times Square …

The broker for the storefront told us on Friday that the building's landlord rented the space for the sign for a month. (It's for a bar-finding app called Bartendr.) So you have about three and a half more weeks left to be amused, shocked, annoyed, disgusted, whatever, etc.

East Village Pharmacy moved from here to 41 Avenue A in early 2011.

The storefront has remained empty since then…

According to another store owner on the block, a veterinary's office will open here.

Well then! EVG reader Riley McCormick spotted this brand-new signage today in the long-tempty corner space on Avenue A and East Fifth Street.

Likely just an alleged wacky ad for the Bartrendr app.

Still, the sign gives you pregnant pause.

Here's a longer view of the corner... Gestations!

And for added impact — a State Liquor Authority notice...

We'll reach out to the broker for more info on the space... The ads originally stated no bars or restaurants, per the landlord's wishes...

There is also a Facebook page...
