Now $1.50, 99¢ Fresh Pizza enters a new era

Top photo by Steven

On the ever-shifting budget pizza front, new signage arrived Sunday at 71 Second Ave., marking the change from 99¢ Fresh Pizza to $1.50 Fresh Pizza here between Fourth Street and Fifth Street...
As far as we can recall, this is the first price increase for the sliceria since its debut 10 years ago. (Bring back Cool Gear!)

And 99¢ Fresh Pizza isn't the only local slice shop to up the price by 51 cents. 99¢ Pizza debuted mid-March 2023 at 418 E. 14th St., just east of First Avenue. By June, their budget slice was going for $1.50.

However, it took ownership until this past October to make the change signage official. (Thanks to EVG reader Tom for this shot from the fall...)

More 99-cent pizza for Avenue A; plus hot dog

Blink and you may have missed this coming soon signage at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street... Incoming: 99-cent pizza and hot dog (singular)...

This will mark the third 99-cent pizza shop on Avenue A between Houston and Ninth Street, joining Alphabet 99-Cent Fresh Pizza and 99¢ Pizza. (There's also FDR 99¢ Slice Pizza just off of A on Second Street.)

The latest 99-cent pizza shop takes over the sliver of a space last leased by Sorbet Cray Cray.

Thanks to Steven for the photos!

How about some 99¢ pizza for Avenue A

Workers have raised the "99¢ Pizza Coming Soon" sign in between two vacant storefronts on Avenue A near East Sixth Street.

We've seen workers gutting the inside of the former Benny's to-go space in the past few days.

On either side, the former D-Lish Pita ($6k) and Benny's ($22k) storefronts remain for rent.

Important questions of our time

When did Joey Pepperoni on First Avenue start serving breakfast? And tacos? And wings? (We hadn't noticed!)

Also, has anyone tried any of the non-$1 pizza items?

Anyway. Just the latest (or not) development in the grim First Avenue $1 pizza wars.

Latest weapon in the First Avenue $1 slice wars: Dancing Pizza Menu Woman

Spotted outside Joey Pepperoni's this past weekend.

When will it end? Full-frontal nudity? Then what about the children?

A look at the incoming 2 Bros. Pizza on First Avenue

As you may recall, a 2 Bros. Pizza is opening at the short-lived BaoBQ space (and Select Burger!) on First Avenue near East 14th Street... EVG reader Joe got a look inside...

Do you think all this $1 (or .99-cent pizza) around here (Joey Pepperoni, Papa John's, 7-Eleven, et al) can make it...? All of which is making local favorite Vinny Vincenz reduce its prices...

The first 2 Bros. opened on St. Mark's Place in 2008.

Famous 99-cent Pizza is now open on East 14th Street

The Famous 99-cent Pizza signage arrived on East 14th Street at the former Desi Roti back on Nov. 17...

And now — it's Grand Opening time this week here just west of Avenue A...

East Village Hawkeye, who took the above photo, ate here and noted that it was pretty tasty as far as 99-cent slices go...

Meanwhile, as everyone has noted, it does seem as if there are more and more cheap-slice shops here. One theory, per Pinch in the comments on the original post:

I'm starting to think this is some kind of reality TV show, like let's see how many cheap pizza shops we can gradually (or may not so gradually) put in one neighborhood and watch people's reactions.
