Signage alert: Anjelly on St. Mark's Place; Rice Bird NYC on 9th Street

Photos by Steven

Signage went up yesterday for Anjelly at 103 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.

We're told this will be an Asian dessert spot.

The previous tenant, CJ Tattoo, relocated to 55 Avenue C in March

Meanwhile... signage arrived last week for Rice Bird NYC at 334 E. Ninth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue...
A worker said this would be a Chinese restaurant.

This retail space has been vacant for years.

Just desserts

There's probably a good reason why there's a discarded figure made from cupcakes, cookies, brownies and doughnuts on 10th Street near Second Avenue this afternoon.

Beetle House founder brings ridiculous milkshakes to 6th Street with Cake Shake

Cake Shake USA has arrived at 514 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

The shop's Instagram account simply notes: "Cake Shake USA COMING SOON TO NYC AND LA!"

Cake Shake is the creation of Zach Neil, the entrepreneur behind the Tim Burton-themed Beetle House on Sixth Street as well as the now-closed Will Ferrell bar Stay Classy on the LES and the short-lived 'Merica NYC on Sixth Street.

Neil shared a few posts via his Instagram account showing Cake Shake's vegan concoctions... such as this pop-mocha shake with vegan chocolate cake, handmade caramel corn, caramel, vegan whipped cream, etc. ...

Cake Shake will also serve over-the-top non-vegan items too, such as the Shake Rattle and Roll, aka the “Elvis” chocolate cake with peanut butter, chocolate ice cream, maple glazed bacon, banana, freeze dried banana cubes, fresh caramel and chocolate straws...

Cake Shack had a soft-opening sneak preview Saturday evening. No word on when they will be open full time.

The space was most recent recently an office for restaurateur Ravi DeRossi and DeRossi Global (they moved a short distance away) ... and Betola Espresso Bar before that.

Tough times for desserts on 2nd Avenue

Several readers noted that the Red Mango on Second Avenue just below East Fourth Street had been closed in recent weeks. Winter hiatus?

The ownership confirmed to us that this location has permanently closed.

Red Mango just opened here in February, which may not have been the best time to open a FroYo shop…

A Red Mango also came and went pretty quickly on St. Mark's Place back in 2008.

Meanwhile, directly next door, Gelato Ti Amo, which was part of an international Tuscany-based chain, has also permanently closed. Workers were cleaning out the 2-year-old space last night.

Perhaps there are enough dessert choices in the neighborhood?

How about some more gelato for Second Avenue?

Jeremiah and I have both been watching the former Estroff Pharmacy space on Second Avenue between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street ... As he noted about the "cryptic symbol" in the front window of the incoming business... "Fro-yo? Mashed potatoes?" ... (And cause for an anxiety dream) ...

[Via JVNY]

Workers on the scene this morning are putting in the new signage and front window, etc. Any guesses?

It will be a gelato shop/cafe.

Gelato? Aren't you thinking that a new gelato shop just opened on Second Avenue? Yes, down just south of East Fourth Street...

Meanwhile, around the corner on St. Mark's Place...

The shell of the former Timi's Gelateria Classica™ — "a gelato franchise for the 21st century, with true Italian artisanal gelato made fresh daily" — sits empty since closing late last year.
