[Updated] Employee from Ray's Pizza in critical condition after an early morning hit and run

A 53 y/o employee from Ray’s Pizza in the East Village is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle at the corner of Third and St Marks Place. His coworkers say he went outside after his shift and was hit. Police are now investigating this as a hit and run @PIX11News

The employee, Lucas Jimenez-Aburto, has died from his injuries sustained in the hit and run, amNY reported.

Cops say Jimenez-Aburto was crossing 3rd Avenue against the signal when he was struck by a motorist traveling northbound with a green light, but well above the speed limit. The driver fled the scene, and police have not positively identified the perpetrator or their vehicle.

According to the Daily News: 

A hit-and-run driver struck and critically injured a man leaving work in the East Village early Sunday. Police found the 53-year-old victim unconscious about 5:45 a.m. on St. Mark's Place near Third Ave. with head injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, police said.

PIX 11 reported the man worked at Ray's Pizza & Bagel Cafe on the SE corner of the block. Police do not yet have a description of the vehicle involved, per ABC 7.

The entry onto St. Mark's Place has been compressed with the new building construction on the NE corner.

A crowdfunding campaign for Andy Gil, killed by a hit-and-run driver on East Houston Street

The older brother of Andy Gil, the 21-year-old killed by a hit-and-run driver on East Houston Street last Thursday morning, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help his family pay for expenses. 

Andy lived with his parents and two siblings.

Andy was just beginning his adult life. At the young age of only 21 years old, Andy had multiple talents that nourished and grew within him daily. 

While working full-time at Casa Cipriani as a lobby door ambassador, Andy also focused on creating, producing and managing bold and understated photo shoots and fashion pieces such as clothing and handbags. His ambition and drive to become a successful and hard-working son to provide for our mother and family touched the lives of everyone around him. 

Andy, being the sweetest and most kind-hearted person he was, threw himself into all of these different projects as a way to provide for our mother. He believed in nothing more that he would one day buy a house for our mother and was even planning a trip to Mexico so that she could see her mom, whom she hasn't seen in decades. He was ultimately the kindest and most gentle family-oriented young man. 

Police say Gil was crossing Houston at Forsyth from south to north when he was struck and dragged by a sedan that continued westbound. The driver remains at large.

According to NBC 4, authorities identified the victim as Andy Eduardo Gil, 21. He was reportedly walking south to north across Houston at Forsyth.

The Daily News spoke with the young man's grieving parents. 

Dad Eduardo Gil recalled his son working at a hotel while pursuing his aspirations of becoming a photographer and graphic designer, adding the young man was headed to a scheduled photo shoot when killed that morning.

Per Myles Miller at Channel 4, citing surveillance video:

The traffic light changed as he was in the median, and a private sanitation truck slowed to let him pass.

At that same time, however, a black sedan can be seen speeding around the right side of the truck. The car struck the victim ... and dragged him along the street. Both the car and sanitation truck left Gil in the middle of the street, and drove away.

The sedan was last seen driving westbound on Houston.

Police are searching for the driver of a sedan they say struck and killed a 21-year-old man early this morning on East Houston Street. 

According to ABC 7, the pedestrian was crossing East Houston at Forsyth Street around 5 a.m. when he was hit by a sedan driver, who fled the scene. 

Per ABC 7:

Workers in the area who have seen the surveillance [footage] say it's clear the driver was going way too fast into the intersection. 

"I'm not too sure if he saw the person, but even if he didn't, at least stop if you know you hit someone," said Justin Lopez, who works nearby. "And he didn't."

[Updated]: E-cyclist killed by speeding hit-and-run driver on East Houston at Avenue B

A 24-year-old man riding an e-bike was struck and killed in a hit-and-run collision last night on East Houston at the Clinton Street-Avenue B intersection. 

Police sources told ABC 7 that the e-cyclist, identified as Borkot Ullah, was hit while attempting to cross East Houston — from Clinton to Avenue B — around 11 p.m.

The black Subaru Outback was traveling eastbound. The driver did not stop and was later seen heading northbound on the FDR, ABC 7 reports.

Streetsblog reports that Ullah would be the 14th cyclist or e-bike rider killed so far this year.

In previous years, EVG readers have expressed concerns about this intersection.

The deadly incidents come amid a spike in fatalities on New York City streets. At least 131 people have died in crashes so far this year, the highest total to-date since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014.

City officials have attributed the growing death toll to a nationwide increase in reckless drivers, who took advantage of empty streets at the height of the pandemic, and have kept up the deadly habit.

An increase in hit-and-run incidents, however, dates back to before the pandemic. According to Transportation Alternatives, there were 36,000 hit-and-run incidents in 2013, compared to an average of 45,000 in the last three years.

Streetsblog has surveillance video of the collision. 

A video from the scene showed clearly that the cyclist had the light and that the driver swerved around stopped traffic to run the red light and strike Ullah. After the crash, the driver is seen racing away at a high rate of speed as two cops in an unmarked police car — which was right behind the hit-and-run driver and might have been pursuing the driver before the crash — pulled over to check on the victim.

Report: Arrest made in hit-and-run death of East Village cyclist

Police said today that they've made an arrest in the hit-and-run death of Chaim Joseph, a 72-year-old East Village resident who was struck by a private oil truck shortly before 6 a.m. on Feb. 4 while he was riding in the bike lane near the intersection of Eighth Avenue and West 45th Street.

According to published reports, the NYPD arrested 56-year-old Queens resident Kenneth Jackson, who worked for Brooklyn-based Approved Oil company.

As Streetsblog reported, Jackson was charged with failure to yield and failure to exercise due care.

Per Streetsblog:

The charge of failure to yield suggests that police believe Joseph had the right of way and was pedaling with the light when Jackson allegedly ran him down.

Jackson ... faces a maximum of 30 days in jail — although such sentences are rare.

Days after Joseph was killed by the oil truck, police responded by ticketing cyclists a block from the hit-and run site. The following day cyclists rallied outside the Midtown North stationhouse.

On March 11, cycling advocates installed a ghost bike for Joseph on Eighth Avenue and 45th Street. Via the Families for Safe Streets Facebook page: "We learned of his beautiful acts of kindness, his commitment to social justice, his generous spirit and his deep respect for all living beings."

Police say that Jackson was driving the truck for Approved Oil Company of Brooklyn when he killed Joseph. Jackson is the third reported driver from Approved Oil to kill a pedestrian or cyclist in the last two years.

In an email, Approved Oil attorney J. Bruce Maffeo said, "There is no evidence that Ken Jackson was driving negligently or aware that he had hit the bicyclist who was dressed in dark clothes and traveling at night. As a result the police who investigated the incident declined to arrest him at the time and correctly saw the tragic incident as an accident—nothing more or less."

Maffeo added, "The charge against Ken involves an untested NYC statute that criminalizes any motor vehicle accident involving a fatality. While Ken and Approved Oil sympathize with the victim and his family, neither he nor the company acted negligently, much less criminally, in this case and intend to vigorously contest the charge."

Joseph Cutrufo, a spokesperson for Transportation Alternatives, countered, "This crash happened in midtown Manhattan, a block from Times Square, where there's no shortage of light. And last we checked, it's not a crime to wear dark clothes. It is, however, against the law to kill a person with an oil truck."

Report: East Village cyclist killed in early-morning hit-and-run near Times Square

A 72-year-old East Village resident was killed early this morning while he was riding his bike near Times Square.

The Post identified the victim:

Chaim Joseph, 72, of the East Village was hit by a private oil truck shortly before 6 a.m. while he was riding in the bike lane near the intersection of Eighth Avenue and West 45th Street in Midtown.

The motorist then drove off, cops said.

Joseph was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center, but he could not be saved.

Per Streetsblog:

The afternoon, an NYPD spokeswoman said that the “driver and the vehicle have been identified.” She declined to give further details. No one has been arrested as of 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Reader report: Hit-and-run on East 7th Street and Avenue B

EVG reader Mayra Diaz passed along this photo and info just after 9 this evening:

Yellow cab hit an elderly man on a bike and left speeding away. Police and ambulance were called. Bicyclist can walk and is in ambulance.

However, Mayra noted that the cab driver returned to the scene 15 minutes later and gave a statement to the NYPD. No word if any charges were filed ...

The NYPD installed a surveillance camera at East Seventh Street and Avenue B back on June 26.
