'Love' crazy

  • I've been listening to "We Love You" by the Rolling Stones because the song reminds me of a friend who died this year.
  • Somehow, I'd never seen the promo video for the song from 1967 that (thank you, IMDB, cutting and pasting) included footage from recording sessions along with segments that re-enacted the 1895 trial of Oscar Wilde, with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Marianne Faithfull respectively portraying Wilde, a judge and Lord Alfred Douglas.
  • The IMDB description helpfully notes the following: "Footage also appears of Brian Jones, apparently high on drugs with his eyes drooping and unfocused." (So 2021!) More facts about the song here.

'Rocks Off' on the Bowery

Revisiting a few videos by the Rolling Stones after the passing of drummer Charlie Watts this week at age 80.

Robert Frank shot this footage of the band for a "Rocks Off" video circa 1972... filmed in NYC and Los Angeles... There are some moments on the Bowery here — you may catch a glimpse of the intersection at East Houston...

Tuesday's parting shot

RIP Charlie Watts. The drummer for the Rolling Stones has died. He was 80.

The above is a grainy screengrab from the “Waiting on a Friend” video ... when the Stones played inside what was the St. Mark’s Bar & Grill on the SE corner at First Avenue.

Read more about the video shot on St. Mark's Place in July 1981 here.

Undercover of the sidewalk bridge

Spotted the other day on Second Street... teasing an imminent announcement of a Rolling Stones U.S. tour, reportedly including a June 2019 stop at MetLife Stadium...

Start me up: Waiting on a Friend opens on 1st Avenue and St. Mark's Place

A new bar called Waiting on a Friend recently debuted here at 132 First Ave. at St. Mark's Place.

The corner space had been VBar St. Marks before a conversion to Colibri last September. Not sure who's behind the new venture at the moment. (You can find the bar's Instagram account here.)

We had some reader-submitted photos in mid-to-late August as the place was under renovation...

The bar is named for the song by the Rolling Stones from their 1981 album Tattoo You... one of the reader photos shows a new mural inside the bar of the album cover ...

And, as you may know, the "Waiting on a Friend" video was shot on St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue... where Keith and Mick eventually saunter into this corner space, when it was the St. Mark's Bar & Grill. There, the other band members are already assembled (this old EVG post has pics from the shoot) ...

I'm just waiting on the paint to dry

Workers are painting the landing at 96 St. Mick's Mark's Place ... a stoop made famous, in part (as well as this), by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in the 1981 video by the Rolling Stones for "Waiting on a Friend."

EVG regular Bill the Libertarian Anarchist mentioned this ... and one of the workers said that the Stones would have to come back to do an updated version...

And might as well...

Flashback: I'm not waiting on a lady...say, what the hell is Mick wearing anyway?

Yesterday's post about the Billy Joel video shoot on St. Mark's Place circa 1986 prompted a few people to discuss when the Rolling Stones filmed "Waiting on a Friend" down the block at No. 98.

So! Let's revisit this EVG post from Dec. 23, 2008... titled I'm not waiting on a lady...say, what the hell is Mick wearing anyway?

-----

Yeah, we've all seen the video for "Waiting on a Friend" enough times...

However, we've never seen these photos taken by schillid when the Stones were shooting the video on St. Mark's Place in July 1981. (I found the photos at the It's Only Rock'n Roll Stones fan site.) Here, the boys hang out at the old St. Mark's Bar & Grill on the corner of First Avenue.

Here's what the corner looks like now.

Why yes — you can buy a $600,000 ticket to see the Rolling Stones in New Jersey

As you may have heard, The Rolling Stones — a popular music combo from England — are playing two dates in December at The Prudential Center in New Jersey. Tickets went on sale today at noon.

We talked to one EVG reader who was shut out of the sales.

But! Don't fret! There are plenty of tickets available on StubHub...

...where you can pay $600,000 for one General Admission seat.

Or, you could buy this cute little one-bedroom co-op on East Fifth Street with a private garden for $589,000...

Tough call?

Back to the Stones age

That malarkey about an impromptu Fall Out Boy show yesterday at Washington Square Park made me want to...Oh, forget it.

On May 1, 1975, the Stones announced their summer tour by playing an impromptu set on a flatbed truck on lower Fifth Avenue. Here's some shitty-looking footage about the surprise gig from two newscasts...I love the couple's reaction at the 2:18 point.

An old friend returns

Jeremiah gave us an inside look at the new International Bar. Excellent news for a neighborhood losing its character. The bar (re)opens June 18.

Meanwhile, a salute to the International circa 1981, when it was still on St. Mark's. Watch Keith saunter by it at about the 13-second spot.

(And yes, I know I've posted this video before...at least now I have a reason...)
