1st Avenue curbside dining structure is gone with the wind (again)

Today's high winds — reported at 40-plus mph at times during the gale warning — toppled this curbside dining setup on First Avenue between Fifth Street and Sixth Street (thanks to Jeremiah Moss for the photos!)
Turns out the structure belongs to Panna II, which was not open at the time. Owner Boshir Khan told Curbed that this was the third time (as Curbed noted — !) that his structure has toppled over.

Per Curbed:
[H]e hasn’t been able to install a sturdier structure because of the expense; this one, he says, cost him $2,000, and more substantial ones can cost more than ten times that figure. "If you want to do it permanently, it's a lot of money,” he says. Even though he's already looking into putting it back up, Khan says he's still unsure about how plausible outdoor dining will be once the weather turns from chilly to flat-out cold: "We have a heater and everything, and people [still] don't want to sit down." Over the past two weeks, Khan says, no diner has wanted to eat outside.
NYC restaurateurs have until Dec. 15 to fully adapt their structures to the winter, per city guidelines.

An EVG reader also reported a damaged curbside structure outside Takahachi/Drom on Avenue A near Sixth Street...

Last night's high winds damage outdoor dining spaces on St. Mark's Place

Given the gale-force winds last night (and that rare tornado warning!), we wondered how the neighborhood's outdoor dining structures fared... a quick survey this morning found some damaged spaces along St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue...
... though, to be honest, these spaces often look similar on any given Sunday morning... thankfully the damage didn't appear to be any worse than this around the neighborhood (please let us know in the comments if you noticed other storm-related damage) ...

Gothamist has a recap of the storm's wrath right here.

Friday's parting shot

It was so windy today that the umbrellas were calling 911.

Wind claims part of the Avenue C Pharmacy awning

Today's high winds (#windmaggedon!) brought down the awning alongside the Avenue C Pharmacy between 11th Street and 12th Street. The awning fell in the grassy area to the south of the shopping complex where there weren't any pedestrians.

Thanks to @evan_kapitansky for sharing the photo.

In other words, it's really windy. That's the weather forecast for now. Photo today on Second Avenue by Derek Berg.

The wind advisory is effect until midnight... no word on any tree damage in Tompkins Square Park or elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Well blow me down

For some reason there is a tent on the roof of the building housing Tarallucci E Vino on the northwest corner of 10th Street and First Avenue.

Anyway, the tent is now on the sidewalk below this afternoon thanks to a nice gust of wind...

Steven Hirsch, who took this photo, says that no one was injured… Police are on the scene.

Wind KOs front door at the Bean on First Avenue

Winter Storm Saturn is heading our way... expect wet snow, rain, sleet, ice, misery, doom, despair. That kind of thing. Meanwhile, the wind has already been whipping up... this afternoon, EVG regular William Klayer notes that the wind took out one of the doors at the Bean on First Avenue at East Ninth Street...

Previously.

The casualties of wind

As we first reported, it is windy today. How windy?

It blew some sort of animal pelt or, perhaps, an Ewok, into this tree on Avenue A...

...it ravaged the 7-Eleven signage on the Bowery...

...and whipped the pants off this guest outside the Standard East Village...

Careful out there.

FDNY removes dangling duct on St. Mark's Place

A little earlier this evening, the FDNY was on the scene at 77 79 St. Mark's Place just west of First Avenue... Reader EVGayBear sent along these photos with a short narrative: "So this duct was hanging off the roof of the building, and the firefighters went up in their ladder, ripped it off, and took it down before it could fall and crush people. I guess the high winds knocked it over."

I was also thinking that duct looked familiar for a moment... like, a hand...

A mighty wind

Winds were gusting up to 50 mph over night, at least according to my friends at the Weather Channel.

Still, however gusty, that probably doesn't explain how this Villager box moved from the west to east side of Avenue B near Eighth Street during the night...
