Is this really such a bad thing?
From the wire!
Public bathrooms in NYC subway close at midnight
NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City bar-hoppers heading home may want to heed nature's call before getting on the subway - or suffer for the entire ride.
New York City Transit has been shutting the 78 public bathrooms in the subway system between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. for the past few weeks. Officials say the idea is to guarantee cleaning crew access during those hours.
Straphanger advocate Gene Russianoff says the bathrooms should seldom be closed.
Subway riders complain that the timing of the closures coincides with the hours that bars and clubs get out.
Rider Herby Campbell pointed out that the alternative to the public facilities - grabbing a corner for relief - could get you locked up.

ReplyDeleteI have never met anybody in my 40+ years of living in this city who has entered a public bathroom in the subway. Once I went into one at Penn Station but does that count as a subway or a commuter train station? I cannot think of seeing a bathroom in the subway. Are they in the heart of Brooklyn somewhere? Where are these hidden gems? Are they stocked with toilet paper? Do they cost a quarter? With the change in demographics have they become attractive and safe and I just missed the trend? I'm stunned.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was actually surprised to read that there were 78 "public" restrooms in the subway stations. The ones I've seen -- during the day -- have always been padlocked.
